As the topic says, is there anyone here who's had any experience with or knowledge of midwives in Quebec (preferably Quebec City, but I'll take any info I can get)? I'm here on a visitor record and preparing to file for PR as common-law, but my partner and I still have a few months before we can apply. Which of course means that I won't be eligible for RAMQ for quite a while. Meanwhile, we just found out that we're most likely expecting a family addition this summer, and now I'm trying to figure out how to pay for it. (Yes, I know we failed at being prepared. Believe me, this was not the plan. The plan was actually well thought-out and logical; our execution was just lacking, apparently.)

Anyway, everything I've read has recommended getting in touch with a midwife, but I can't find much solid information about the costs associated with that option, aside from "way cheaper than a hospital." Can anyone provide any insight, or at least point me in the right direction? I'd appreciate it more than I can express in type.

It depends on the province. For Quebec, while you won't be eligible for RAMQ for the first three months following registration in general, you may have coverage for services related to pregnancy.

See http://www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/en/choose-quebec/daily-life/health/index.html

Code:
Health Insurance Plan eligibility

The health insurance card enables you to receive health care—medical services and hospitalization—covered by the Québec Health Insurance Plan.

Individuals settling in Québec are generally covered by the plan after a three-month waiting period following their registration with the RAMQ. Certain individuals are exempt from this waiting period. The RAMQ will inform you if the exemption applies to you or any member of your family. Persons subject to a waiting period must pay all costs for health services received during this period or take out private insurance.

[b]However, certain health care services may be provided free of charge during the waiting period: services related to pregnancy[/b] or required by victims of violence, as well as services for individuals suffering from an infectious disease that could affect public health.

Yeah, unfortunately tourists aren't eligible to register for RAMQ anyway.

We were planning to wait until we're eligible to apply, and then see what's moving the fastest at that point and weigh our options. So, not sure yet.
