So I have already tried to get ahold of CIC to get the answer to this, and I cannot get through. Unfortunately it's a rather long drive to get to the nearest office in Ontario for some face to face help. I am hoping someone on here can give me a little bit of information on this.

The Background:
Moved here 4 years ago from Britain with my then family. Settled in a rural location as runners/caregivers of a local Trailer park, to which I am a listed co-owner. Since then, have split off from my spouse (legally separated). I have been staying on-site with the ex-family, other then my ex-spouse and one ex-sibling (who live two towns over). Gained employment last year with a local business and looking to move out and on my own. Ex-family is giving me a hastle...as they do not want to run the business without the handyperson. It's not a good situation, as they are beligerant, demeaning and verbally/mentally abusive.

The Problem:
Got fed up a few days ago with how I was treated, and left. I am currently living with a friend from work till I can find my own place. Ex-family is contacting me saying if I don't come back I am going to be arrested as I am not legal to be here. I do not know if this is true. When we landed here 4 years ago, it was the ex-family who arranged the immigration, etc. They will not give me access to my own immigration records, and as I said before, I cannot get ahold of CIC to find out for my self. I was given a SIN related to the family business... and i am currently working using that for tax form purposes, etc. I do not wish to return to this family or this life as they are horrible to me, but I am worried if I do not return, I will be arrested. I do not know the laws as they pertain to immigrants and I cannot find the information anywhere on CIC or other related sites.

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it. I want to stay here and work and live, but I do not know what to do. I am going to continue trying to get ahold of CIC but in the meantime I am tired of the harassment.

Another Canuck (hopefully soon!)

This is an odd situation. Does your SIN start with a 9? If it does, it's a temporary SIN and means you are not a PR. If it doesn't, it's just a regular SIN, not connected to the family business although if you came in on a business visa, your PR might possibly be somehow limited to fulfilling business requirements. There are 3 things you can do.

1. Call CIC, you have to pick through the couple of automatic menus at the start and then press 0 to get a person. 2. Find out who is your MP and call him/her and ask for help. 3. Find the number of a newcomers/immigrant centre in ON and ask them for help.

Now, for the 4th thing, I am pretty sure that they can not deny you access to your own immigration documents. These are your documents too. You can also contact the police and tell them that these people are holding your immigration documents from you and see if they will do anything. It is possible that they will go there with you and help you get your documents back.
