My fiance and I are getting married a year from today ;D. We (at that point) will have been in a relationship for over two years. How long should we wait to file the forms? This a commited and lasting relationship and our folks will vouch as such but I am trying to avoid problems and delays. As though, yes we are newly married, as I'd like to file as soon as possible, but we have already been in a relationship for a while.

You can file immediately after marrying. No need to wait!

If you are filing as "Common Law" you can file one year after you started to live together. If you are filing after marraige you can file right away. We were married July 6th and filed July 29th. If you are filing right after marraige be prepared to show the extend of your relationship leading up to marriage.

File right away after getting married (well, once you have all the documents you need). You have lots of time to prepare the application beforehand.

They will not be suspicious if you file right away after marrying. They will be suspicious if a couple gets married, then live apart for a long time before applying. They'll also be suspicious if you apply right after marrying when you have only known each other for a short time or get married the first time you meet in person, but this doesn't apply in your situation.

@canadianwoman: we'll be filing in november, we got married in June but it took quite a while to get all the papers....does that sounds too long? we've known each other for MANY years! it's a long story! ;D

each case is different, and if you have a reason to getting married, not living together after and filling, that's OK I think! and from June to November would not be a long time - it takes time to get all the papers together, and if you have enough proofs for your relationship before and after your marriage, you'll be fine!
Good luck,
Sweden

It should be OK. It does take a while to get the police certificate, so some delay is normal. Also, if you have a lot of evidence your relationship is genuine, there will be fewer concerns in general. I've seen appeal cases where people waited three years, for example: in cases like that, CIC's belief will be that they don't really seem to care that they are apart, so it must not be real. Even then, if the couple had a good reason, they would probably be accepted.

Thanks Sweden and Canadianwoman! We have LOTS of proofs and from our perspectives, no "red flags" so hopefully, it will go smoothly! :) The waiting will start soon!!

Hi Bibiche, we are in the same boat, got married in June and application was sent November. Obtaining our marriage certificate and police clearances for my husband indeed took a long time. I don't think submission of application 3 months post-wedding would be a problem. Hope everything goes well on our applications :). Cheers!!!

Thanks RM15.......good to see we're not alone in that november boat! :-)) Actually, it was the same for my husband, took a while to get papers and to get them certified etc. In fact, I am waiting for his papers this week and as soon as they come in, I'll send them to the M-Office. Good luck to you too! ;)

Hi Bibiche, here's a link to join the November batch: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/november-2012-applicants-unite-t123516.0.html#new

RM15, thanks a lot for the info and for accepting to update the file!! That's great. I'll send you my info....as soon as it arrives. Hubby should get his last paper this week, then send them to me and I'll fwd them to Mississauga!! I'll send you the details soon hopefully! ;) and thanks again!

Your welcome, Bibiche.. Goodluck and hope you'll receive the papers that you need soon so you can start with the countdown too :)

That's what I thought. But reassurance is good. This is a long, at sometimes, tough process. I was intending on filing when I had had a new social card and passport ( as I am taking his name). I have the paperwork, just not filled out, and we have talked about the process so we both know what is to be expected of both of us ( as much as we can, anyway).
