I never had to go to secondary, post my first visit to get a paper i94 (expired visa). Even the first time it barely took 20 mins, no where near 1-2 hours.

    PR card renewal

Hi Folks, I'm applying for my PR card renewal and had a few questions regarding the application form: 1) Do day trips to the U.S. have to be declared? It is clear that they have to be declared for citizenship applications but not so clear for PR renewal. 2) If the answer to 1 is "yes"; I was...

Daily commute (Detroit-Windsor) (H1b and Canada PR)

Hi Folks, I have a tax question. For those of you who have been commuting, I'm assuming you file 1040NR (non resident) federal and state tax. Do you guys claim standard deduction via treaty? If not, do you deduct the state tax from the federal return as an itemized deduction? In the case that...

    Foreign income and tax credit

Thanks for your reply. She is drawing a salary from a company her dad setup so not sure she has that form. I have her 2019-20 tax return which gives me the total tax paid. Once she files for 2020-21 I will have that too. I'm just wondering as to the method of pro-rating.

    Foreign income and tax credit

My wife immigrated to Canada from India. She had income in India before and after landing in Canada. For 2020 taxes I realize that she has to report all the income she earned post landing in Canada (employment, interest, etc.). However, I'm a bit confused about the tax credit portion of things...

Selling stocks (ESPP) before moving to Canada

My CPA did basic calculations to adjust my foreign income and interest/dividends for the days I was a resident in Canada for tax purposes and reported the same on the tax return. He however did not include...

T1135 form as a new immigrant

Hi there. I became permanent resident of Canada in 2017, but officially moved to Canada in 2018 (Oct.). I used a CPA to file my taxes. He did not ask me anything related to T1135 (foreign assets) and hence it was not filed for 2018. I did have foreign income > 100,000. I checked online tax...

As nice and relaxing Canada is; the US is still the envy of the world when it comes to tech professionals. Just once to get the paper I94. I was then called for secondary maybe twice since. You can be called into secondary for random screening (even with Nexus). It may seem dauting at first, but once you commute regularly it all becomes routine and in general hassle free.

I was in a similar situation in late 2018. You will be fine. You will have a paper I94 stamped with the I797A expiration date the first time you go to the US from Canada. Note that sometimes the officer may not be familiar with AVR; just politely ask to go inside and talk to a supervisor.

NO. Only those deemed "essential". Some workers in my company are able to get a letter. Mostly lab folks and in departments deemed essential. Most of folks even in MI are working from home. In general, I think its best to stay home in these unprecedented times.
