Quarantine Plan

You can stay with him in the same apartment and still go to work. My husband landed 3 weeks ago and we did the same in our 1 bedroom apartment and I went to work. The officer at the airport didn’t even ask his quarantine plan, and we had 2 phone calls and 1 visit and we never got in trouble when we said I go to work. It’s just recommended that you have a separate space, EVEN if they have symptoms (which is crazy to me but ahh well) It’s not morally the best, but I couldn’t afford to take time off work with no pay and we didn’t have anywhere else for him to stay. We told the officer we were trying to stay distant but he said we were fine.

just don’t advertise to people around you what you’re doing if you’re worried, because even if it’s legal, most people aren’t going to be okay with it. But I only went to work (where I work alone and wear PPE in common rooms) and didn’t go elsewhere and had groceries delivered to us once he arrived.
Totally agree

It is higher risk to you to live in an apartment with him and to not isolate from him (to the extent possible).

But I don't think it's required if you both stay in the same apartment, do not leave, and do not have contact with others.
Actually it's higher risk if he quarantines in my apartment. Because that could put 4 people at risk.
And me quarantining in the separate bedroom of rental space would allow me to make sure that even if I got exposed to the virus while picking him up from the airport then I don't spread it to my other family members. And he can remain in his separate room to make sure if he got exposed to the virus he does not spread it to me.

The government instructions seem contradicting to me so I'm not sure how to interpret the fact that they say you can quarantine with other people in a household, but NOT in a small apartment... I dont know what they consider a SMALL apartment....
In my opinion, its OK to rent an apartment and live in separate rooms, its better than sharing a house with old parents.

here is the excerpt from Gov't website:
A suitable place of quarantine is one where you:

  • Have access to the necessities of life without leaving your place of quarantine
  • Have a separate bedroom if the space is shared with family/friends who didn't travel with you
  • Can limit interactions with others in the household. If spaces, such as a kitchen, are shared:
    • wear a mask or face covering if a 2m distance cannot be maintained;
    • thoroughly and regularly clean common areas after use
  • Are not living with those at risk of more severe disease
  • Are not in close contact with others who did not travel with you. For example, do not quarantine in:
    • a group or communal living setting, including camps or students dorms unless the location is pre-authorized;
    • a household with a large family or many people
    • a shared small apartment or similar setting
Hi everyone,

I have few more questions:
1) other then submitting qurantine plan via arrivecan app, what other documents must be shown at the airport for airbnb booking confirmation?
2) should we send heads-up to the airbnb host informing him/her that they might be contacted by authorities to confirm we have 14-day booking at his place?
3) how to count 14-days? For example if my husband lands in Canada on Feb 1st then that's the day 1 and Feb 14th would be day 14? Can we Check out in the morning of Feb 14th or must stay quarantined entire Feb 14th and check out on Feb 15th?
4) how and when he will be contacted from 1-888-×××-×××× number to ensure he is following qurantine rules properly?
He would not have active Canadian phone number so can we give my cell-phone number and they can call on this number to verify his qurantine compliance?

Thanks!

I'm not suggesting you all stay in apartment with family. If you are in separate apartment from family, I don't believe you have to isolate from him at all if you remain in flat for the full isolation period. But preferable to isolate from him as well.

I am not sure about AirBnB specifically. but for me they asked the Layout of the place I would be staying.
It should be the following day, in your case the 15th when the quarantine would end
For the contact number, I left my Wife's since I wont have an active line yet

So when they ask you for a layout of the place, do you have to provide image of the floor plan or you can just give a written description (i.e. the place of quarantine has 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, kitchen, etc.)?

And one more question, I have COPR which I received on 21st of December. My question is do I need authorization for travel to Canada.

Is your COPR based on immediate family i.e. spousal sponsorship? If so, you would not need separate authorization, but you will need documents showing immediate family relationship (e.g. marriage certificate and PR/citizen doc of sponsor). Best to check with airline in advance.

Quarantine plan - look up the arrivecan app, need to provide info through that (I've no direct experience). Note also new requirement for covid test.

No it's not based on spousal sponsorship, neither I am an immediate family member nor I am an extended family member. My agents told me that everyone can travel.

I also found this. So, if you can read the 3rd point and can explain this to me, it would be great.

You u have posted in the family sponsorship forum where most are exempt as immediate family members.

You need to identify on what basis you are exempt or how to get an authorisation. Best post in other forums here (for your relevant type of application) to get advice.

Not , you don't have to quarantine with your spouse if you can't afford to skip work. There's no such requirement. Just be careful when you go to work, keep a safe distance from co workers and wear a mask
This is exactly how a whole nursing home and almost all their employees got covid and many will die. If people are going to insist on quarantining with their family at least have the decency to only spread it to your whole family and not others. No matter how much you try to remain separate in a shared home expect all families members to get covid with these new variants.

This is exactly what caused one nursing home to get infected (minus 2 people) plus almost all their staff members. If you can’t afford to quarantIne you should be rethinking any travel to Canada. Not advertising that you are going to work while someone in quarantining in tight quarters with you is allowing others to put themselves at risk. Your colleagues may have avoided your office or taken time off if they were vulnerable or had a vulnerable family member at home. It boggles my mind that any public health official is aware that people are being allowed to do this but people should at least be concerned that they may kill someone because they don’t want to pay for quarantine. All provinces have quarantine facilities. I am sure public health will find people alternative arrangements instead of allowing people sharing spaces and quarantining together to go to work which could potentially lead to huge amounts of infections and could kill people. Many employers may actually pay people to stay home if they realize that someone is coming to work while exposing other employees. At least steps could be taken for all other employees to avoid the potential covid positive employee knowing that they are living with someone under quarantine. It sounds as though you got lucky and your partner was not infected but I can only imagine the potential damage that would have happened of you had spread covid to your workplace and any other public place you frequented. Could only imagine how you would feel and the reaction of others if you had infected people with covid while “Not advertising” that you were coming to work while quarantining with someone in a small space. Some people could have died or had severe health problems for the rest of their lives. Please do not follow this advice. Nobody should be going to work while quarantining with others. People have already died because people have done this. How would you feel if someone came to work and infected your loved one and they died?

Thos essentially confirms why we need forced quarantine like other countries. Also why I tell anyone who is considered vulnerable from pregnant women to the immunocompromised to trust no one and assume anyone may not be quarantining properly.
