Such a relief for many of us!! I don't want to be a killjoy but can they revoke this in a few weeks? If so, they could say some of us had a window to land and they did not take the opportunity.
When are you flying to Canada? My visa will expire this October. So there is plenty of time for me. But right now countries already shut down their borders and not allowing any foreign nationals. So I'm also thinking about this, as well.

My copr expires on may 21st but there is a lockdown where I live (France). Technically they did not ban flights going out of Schengen...
October gives you plenty of time but I had also plenty of time before the pandemic.
Not an easy situation but I can some folks in here having very tight windows!

Canada provides update on exemptions to travel restrictions to protect Canadians and support the economy

News release

March 20, 2020—Ottawa—The Government of Canada is providing an update on travel restrictions put in place to stem the spread of COVID-19.
Exemptions to the air travel restrictions will apply to foreign nationals who have already committed to working, studying or making Canada their home, and travel by these individuals will be considered essential travel for land border restrictions.
The exemptions include
  • seasonal agricultural workers, fish/seafood workers, caregivers and all other temporary foreign workers
  • international students who held a valid study permit, or had been approved for a study permit, when the travel restrictions took effect on March 18, 2020
  • permanent resident applicants who had been approved for permanent residence before the travel restrictions were announced on March 16, 2020, but who had not yet travelled to Canada
Those affected by these exemptions should not try to travel to Canada immediately. We will announce when the exemptions are in place, which we anticipate will be early next week.

I guess I am the only one who doesn't think this is good news. They should have focused on extending the CoPR expiration dates instead of creating exemptions at this stage.

Traveling through multiple airports and taking a (or more) flight increases the risk of infection. We are trying to travel to a country where many of us won't really have enough personal support if it comes to the worst-case-scenario of us getting infected. With supplies flying off the shelves making it difficult to get some essentials, living in some form of temporary housing, while also having to take care of setting up our lives there (banking, long-term accommodation etc), this is going to be more stressful of a move as per me. I honestly don't know right now how we will be supported medically given we might not be eligible for free healthcare if it comes to the worst scenario for any one of us.

Plus, this is affecting the economy and has a higher chance of affecting our job search once there, for those who have to go through that.

Hopefully none of us have to face these additional issues. But the best course of action would have been to stay put for the next month at least. Although I do understand how and why that might be difficult for some/many of us.

You know, i agree with you. To be honest, now that i think of it, we're going to take a risk to go there. An extension would have been better.

Just please everyone be careful. Use a mask, stay away from people, and wipe down surfaces like your plane seat. And most importantly, wash your hands repeatedly.

Agree that whilst people might consder this good news to get clarity but still assumes can find an airline still flying internationally in particular where an indirect transit is required given many airlines parking up most their fleets/laying off staff at least until end June so finding a seat may be challenging for a while.

At least for everyone now the situation is clear although nothing specific about 14 day self isolation on arrival which should be a requirement for the next few months. Plus there are all the ramifications of arriving in a new country virtually in shutdown so unless have immediate family immigration will likely be significantly harder on arrival than usual with many businesses in shutdown for a few months.

Add to this assuming a 14 day self isolation is imposed the challenge of that for a new immigrant and does anyone really want to self isolate with their immediate family members to worst case find out they just happen to be positive themselves?

Hard as it might be if the extension option still open people should seriously consider staying put at least until the summer
