Hello everyone,

About a month and a half after they received my spousal sponsorship application, I was emailed that they needed an RCMP fingerprints-based record check since I had lived in Canada for more than 6 months (something my lawyer's assistant never mentioned...) and that they must receive it by early February.

After a lot of headaches (since I'm no longer in Canada), the record check process is about to begin. I know that this will take about 3 weeks if I have no record, so that's cutting it very close to the deadline, specially if you add the fact that it's the holiday season. My question is: Can I request an extension to this deadline? If yes, would you please let me know how to do it?

Thank you, and happy holidays.

It's very close to the deadline. RCMP still has to finish the criminal record check, send it to the fingerprinting agency. Then it will need to be shipped over to IRCC.

I'm very stressed about missing this deadline. I don't want the application that I worked so hard on be rejected just for this.

Ask your lawyer or your MP to ask IRCC for time extension.

Send the receipt to them and advise that its taking time to process. As soon as its completed upload it. Send the receipt and loe via webform

the checklist CLEARLY states that a police check is required for ALL countries in which you have lived for more than 6 months since the age of 18....i would have checked the checklist plus all my docs before handing it to a lawyer

Thanks for the reply. I notified my lawyer, and he has informed me that he's waiting for a response from IRCC.

I'm working on the letter now, and I will upload it with the receipt soon.

I'm very stupid and clueless when it comes to these things. I was hoping that having the help of a lawyer would make this an "easy" process, but ironically, that's a stupid thing to expect. I should read these things on my own and not expect to be spoonfed. It certainly doesn't help that my case is complicated. I just want my life back; in Canada with my wife and friends, working a decent job.

My motto is regardless if there is help it is still my responsibility to review everything and educate myself. Esoecially for something like this....
