Hi all,

I am planning to visit US for vacation in December 2019 from India. From New York City, I am planning to take a flight/bus to Toronto to activate my PR (I have my COPR already).

Would it be all right? Or do I have to enter Toronto from my home country itself?

Kindly advise.

Just to add that you should be prepared to show or clarify to US CBP your travel plans to leave the US given assume you will be on a one way ticket. Same possibly for the checkin in India given airlines can be nervous about anyone on a one way ticket especially to US.

Oh no, I’m planning to go back to US same day and continue my trip for some more days before returning to India from US

The problem with bus is that your PR landing formalities at the border will take some time (possibly an hour) and the bus will not wait that long. You should do it by flight or car rental. You can return to US by bus.

Right, I will take an early flight and book overnight bus from Toronto same day. Thanks!

How much time does it take for the process to get done?

Also, I heard there are instances where they deny the PR card to be processed if I don't intend to start staying. Is it true?

Depending upon the line ahead of you, it can take 2 hours at the airport.

Yes, they can refuse to process PR card in case of soft landing. But there is nothing you can do about it. You will need to apply for PRTD if that happens.

When dealing with CBSA only answer questions asked do not volunteer any extra information such as you only doing a soft landing. Of course if asked that then answer honestly but if not asked do not offer up that fact. This could reduce the chances of your PR card application being rejected although if happens it happens and nothing you can do about it.

@Bs65 and @lampbreaker

Thanks, but in case they ask then can I tell them my sister lives in US and I am here to find accommodation before they can come next week with all the bags and luggage?

In case they deny processing the PR, will I be told on the spot? Then I cannot generate a SIN too correct?

No, you can still apply for SIN while in Canada using your COPR (for up to 1 year after landing). After 1 year you will need PR card.
