Hello everyone,

I was wondering how easy it would be to get a job in senior to lead level roles in software engineering in Canada ? What would be a decent salary one could expect in the said roles ? Please share your experiences?

If you are coming from the US you are likely to be disappointed on top of the exchange rate. You may find better opportunities in India. All depends on what your priorities and goals are.

Thanks for your reply.
I have been working in the us for over a decade but again I am well aware of the lower salaries in general especially with the exchange rates difference taken into account but I was just trying get an idea of how the job market is like and how easy it would be to find a job in the said roles as well as what the average pay would be like for those roles ? Especially in places like Toronto.

Will let others reply but salary is somewhat about timing and luck and more about who is hiring unless you are willing to wait for a good opportunity. Working in the US most employers will be willing to consider you before actually settling in Canada unlike PRs arriving from overseas. Will let others comment on the figures since I don’t work in IT. In general most families in Toronto will need a second income to lead a more comfortable life while saving.

Anywhere between 90k to 120k for senior to leads. Bear in mind taxes are about 10% more than usa but you get free health care which is the absolute worst healthcare among all developed countries.

I'm not software developer but I think it will depend on technology. In general these days full stack developer are in demand and I do see many jobs available for software developer on LinkedIn or indeed. Those could be your starting points to get an idea of jobs available and once you like some company or job Glassdoor would be a good resource to check salary ranges.

As said on the thread finding job and salary may sometime be the function of timing and little bit of luck. But given you have worked for 10 years in USA it would be extremely difficult to get a salary in same range as USA unless your skill set is truly unique.

Have you been to Europe recently or lived in every country with national healthcare. For example the NHS is certainly a bigger mess at the moment than the Canadian medical system. Elderly people die when there is a heatwave in France. Could go on. It is far from perfect but I would pick Canada over other places.

You may be better off not trying Toronto but moving out into the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area. It's something of a tech hub and a number of well known companies are sited here. Housing is more affordable as well.

Don't think anyone wants to leave USA if the GC situation is favorable. Anyone coming to Canada after spending years in USA is probably leaving because of GC issue.
exactly. with supposed wait times of around 150 plus years for people who happen to be born in India is beyond ridiculous. After a certain age ones priorities in life changes and just money can only go so far. thanks for all the replies everyone

If you can manage remote work, then that works best, low living cost with high salary
Do you know how easy it is to manage taxes and stuff both in us and Canada? I heard it can be a pain if your company does not have a direct Canadian presence.
