How to manage the jacket when taking the flight?

Hi,

This may seem like a lame question. But as a person who has been living in a Tropical climate (southern part of India), I never had to deal with jackets. Now that I just got the PR confirmed (passport request), I am contemplating how I should deal with jacket during flight.

My jacket weights around 1.5 Kg. If I pack it along with the luggage, I'm afraid I wont be able to wear it when I land in Toronto (during mid of Jan) since the luggage will be checked in to the cargo area. If I put the jacket in the handbag, then nothing else will go in there I'm afraid because of the size. I cant really wear it when starting from India (Bengaluru/Kochi) since it would be too hot. Should I just hold it in my hand right from start ? Would this be an issue when undergoing the security clearance at the airport ?

There is a very good chance that I'd be changing flights at Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt or Heathrow. If this is the case, would I be able to access my luggage and take out the jacket from it? Before I take the flight to Toronto, I can hold it in my hand if I can access the luggage in between.

Any other suggestions ?

Which airline(s) you flying with Air India for example then in addition to a carry on bag they like other airlines allow a coat to be taken onboard so you just carry it with you .

At a security checkpoint usually have to put jacket and carry on bag through Xray anyway so you would be carrying the jacket not wearing it.

Checked Luggage is usually checked all way through to final destination if on one ticket so you would not have access to it until reaching Toronto.

If your destination is Toronto, then you'll be able to get your luggage back before exiting the airport (when you'll need your jacket). So, you can remove it from your suitcase while still inside the airport where it's warm, and then put it on.

Well said , I didn’t think of the obvious solution as long as room in the checked bag of course !

Tip : if you are running out of space, you can always wear your jacket. Sure it is inconvenient during security but otherwise you can carry it all the way with you. Put it in overhead bin in airplane.

Tip: always pack one set of emergency jacket in your hand bag (or carry on you) for the rare case of misplaced bags

Ofcourse if you have lot of space left and trust that you would be fine with your bags, putting in checked bag is best advice.

Thanks for the response! I have not booked the ticket yet. But I'm leaning towards Cathay Pacific. I did not get good response about Air India/Canada flights.

Even if I have to change terminals, the airlines would automatically deal with my checked-in luggage ?

At the risk of sounding stupid, what if I need to face the real world when getting out of the airplane and before entering the departure area? Asking because of my experience with domestic flights. We always get out through a movable ramp, enter a bus and then reach the departure gates. At -20 degree I'm afraid if I'll freeze to death once the flight's door opens :-|

Ok so looking at Cathay Pacific it is a one stop flight (if you chose that one) with a short connection in Hong Kong so your bag(s) should be checked all the way through to Toronto. The plane according the Cathay website will be an A350 into Toronto so very unlikely will not pull up to the terminal so you will be inside the terminal when exiting the plane.

If you chose the 2 stop flight via Hong Kong and Vancouver the you would probably clear immigration/customs at Vancouver with your bag and then drop off bag at the connections desk for the domestic flight to Toronto. Again unlikely any bussing involved.

If were me I would go with the one stop as that is approx 10 hours less travel time.

With luggage if travelling on a single ticket with Cathay or in conjunction with a code share airline then even with connections or a connection drop off your luggage should be checked all way to Toronto.

Sure if you have a connection where your first entry into Canada is not your final destination you may need to collect luggage there (vancouver for example)clear immigration/customs and drop off at connections desk for the domestic sector but that would be the exception. Check with your airline

Thank you so much for taking time to research on the flight details and giving me a detailed answer! I appreciate it!

But there is always the few seconds freezing temperature when you get off the plane in Toronto. Also, since OP is from a tropical country and the airconditioning in CX flights are often low (their blankets that they provide might not warm him up), therefore, I suggest he should dress warmly.

Good point that people who do not fly very often tend to forget in that an airplane is one long air conditioned tube where you could be sitting for 10 hours at a time so no use getting on with shorts or short sleeve shirt/blouse without access to an extra layer. And yes that short walk from the plane door along the jet bridge to the terminal is unlikely to be heated but not likely to get frost bite for that short walk.

A light jacket or inner jacket would do for airplane purpose as well. I am assuming op is asking in context of snow jackets which can tend to be bulky.

Yes, you're right. I just bought a jacket rated for -20 degree. I am sure I'll need more layers inside.
