CCB - converting world income

I'm Canadian and moved my family from the US to Ontario in August 2018. My husband (US - now a PR) has not been working. We filed taxes for the partial year that we were here in 2018. Just last month i filed for CCB and today received notice that we are getting a payment for 2018, but that they can't calculate what we might be eligible for from July 2019-June 2020. The letter states that we must convert our world income for the period earned in 2018 before we moved to Canada.

I'm sure this is a dumb question - but how and where do we do this? My husband and I both earned income in the US between January and July 2018. Is there a place on the CRA website where we can do this? Just in our account? The letter doesn't provide details. I admit I have not explored the website much.

Also, wouldn't our world income in 2018 have been more relevant for the payment we received for 2018? I'm surprised we received a payment for 2018, considering this was the year that we earned income outside the country.

Thanks for any help!

The 2018 payment is a mistake, as they require your 2017 income to calculate that. They will likely catch that at some point, so you should be proactive and send 2017 as well.

You need to use the Bank of Canada annual rates for each specific year to convert your US income.

Thanks for your reply. Since we didn't live in canada for 2017, do we still need to provide our income?

Where do we send our 2017-2018 out of country income

Yes. CCB payments received from July 2018 to June 2019 were based on 2017 income. CRA will catch up and request it later on if you don't send it now.

The letter you received should have explained it where to send it.

CCB is based.on past level of income. No difference where the income comes from. If you were earning a good salary in the US you shouldn’t receive the same amount of CCB as someone who has been unemployed in Canada.

Assume you filed taxes based on tax treaties with US for the whole year not just for selective months.

If you are mentioning tax treaties in regards to their Canadian tax return, it doesn't apply. They were not required to US income earned prior to becoming Canadian residents.

Thinking of the reverse (US returns). They didn’t actually have to file Canadian returns since they moved in August.
