URGENT: Changing DLI - Study Permit Expiration Question

Sep 21, 2019

Hello,
I have a study permit which expires 30 December, 2019.

I was not aware that one must inform Canada Immigration if they change levels of study.

I graduated my previous undergraduate program on 01 May, 2019, and accepted an application to study at my new program, which starts 03 September, 2019.

However, I did not inform Canada Immigration that I would be starting another program.

Does this mean that my study permit has been terminated, as there is a rule which stipulates that study permits extend only 90 days after you complete your studies? Do I have to apply for restoration of my study permit?

Thanks for all your help.

You’re fine .
Go change your DLI , mention the start and end dates of your course .
I’m sure it does ask you that .

I changed mine, though I didn’t complete my previous program.

Changed my course online, applied for extension.

As long as your permit doesn’t expire, you’re good.

There is a stipulation that one's permit expires 90 days after completion of their studies, though.

Does this mean that my permit has expired, as 90 days passed after I graduated my undergraduate program, even though I accepted an offer to start full time studies as a master's student? I accepted the offer before my undergraduate program finished, ie. before I graduated.

Thank you for your help.

Hi. Did you change your dli prior applying for exntension or as soon as you received letter of acceptance from new school? For your request for extension did you submit letter of explanation for extending and addtional proof of funds?

As soon as I got my new LOA .

Funds are required, but it’s lenient comparing to getting Initial SP.

LOE yes as I had withdrawn from old program, I had to explain my situation.

Which brings to me the question , why does your SP expire more than 90 days after course completion ?

Usually we’re given permit of course end date+ 90 days .

Your best bet would be to call IRCC.

It is because I finished earlier than the expected graduation date in my course.

Does this means that, because I did not inform Immigration Canada within 90 days of graduation that I accepted another degree of full time studies, they automatically cancelled my study permit?

A student should begin or resume their studies at their new institution within 150 days from the day that they ceased or completed their studies at the previous institution. If a student does not resume their studies within 150 days, they should do either of the following:

If they do not change their status or leave Canada, they are considered non-compliant with their study permit conditions.

So if you consider 01/05/2019
Then you should atleast apply for extension before 01/10/2019.

I am definitely starting my new program within the 150 day limit, but I read on some forum posts online that the CIC will automatically cancel a student visa 90 days after they finish their program of studies.

In this case, does that mean that my study permit was automatically cancelled, as I did not change my DLI to my new program before 90 days of finishing my previous program of studies?

Thanks again for your help.

Have you changed your DLI now ? Or yet to ?

I have not changed my DLI as I am a USA student. I received my study permit directly at the physical border into Canada, without filling out an online or paper application, and with only my CAQ, as I study in Quebec. Because of this, I have not been able to connect my study permit to my CIC online account, so I have been unable to change my DLI online.

I have already submitted a request via "Technical Support" regarding not being able to link my study permit, and will call CIC tomorrow.

I also read the 90 days thing on Extension page.

According to that yes your permit expired.

But you’re continuing to study so I really cant answer your question.

Call IRCC, change your DLI if you didn’t yet.
