OHIP Questions (including a weird one)

My husband and son (both PR) and I (citizen) will be landing in Canada next week, staying with family, possibly coming back to the States for a week or so and then moving into our new home when our lease begins October 1. These are my questions about OHIP:

1) To confirm, once the three months is passed you get your OHIP card immediately, so there is no advantage to applying the week we land?

2) When they ask "When did you arrive in Ontario?" is that asking our landing date?

3) When they ask "When did you take up permanent residence?" is that the same as our landing date or the date that our lease begins?

4) For my husband and son, I presume that they check "yes" for the "are you a new immigrant" question. But this is my weird question, I am a Canadian citizen who has never before lived in Canada (I have dual with American and have only ever lived in the States) do I check yes or no to "Are you a Canadian citizen returning to Canada?".

1. Nothing is 'automatic'. You have to apply for OHIP. But there us no need to apply immediately. We carefully got the required documents specified on the website and went to Sercpvices Ontario offices with them about 2 months after landing and got the cards soon after 3 months.

2. In your case, you would be fine to use your first date of kanding, as long as you will be spending at least 153 of the first 183 days in Ontario.

3. Should be date of landing. Get your passport stamped or ask for a record of entry. Also your sta,ped CoPR would work. Check OHIP website.

4. Good question. Dunno. Just turn up and ask them at Services Ontario office, its a pretty minor point. I had not been in Ontario as an adult for 40 0lus years and it was not an issue.

You should NOT use normal travel / holiday insurance, you may find a claim denied as you are not someone visiting Canada on holiday from your home country. That is what travel insurance is for.

Instead you need Canadian gap insurance for 3 months. Many companies do this, we used GMS and it cost about CAD 650 each. ManuLife offer it as do DUI. Try google.

Of course it is not mandatory to have insirance for the gap at all, it is up to you and your attitude to risk.
