Hi, My wife and son both are Canada Citizens, both have India OCI card now, due to family circumstances both of them want to spend 1 year or maximum 1.5 year time period in India, and after 1.5 year time period will return to Canada permanently. Is there any residency obligation for Canada Citizens too (as Canada PR holders have to spend atleast 2 years out of last 5 years)

Can they live in India for 1 year or 1.5 years time period. ?

As far as I know, as a Canadian citizen you can remain in India forever if you so desire. You are not tied to living in Canada but can live anywhere else. As for the OCI information, I have no idea.

Hi, once you are a Canadian citizen, you don’t have a physical presence requirement. You’re free to travel and reside abroad, assuming you have the right visas if necessary.
As an OCI holder, you are not restricted to # of days of residence in India either. Some restrictions in employment, voting apply: https://www.immihelp.com/nri/overseascitizenshipindia/oci-benefits.html

Another thing you may have to look into is taxes if either your wife or son will be earning. They may have to report overseas income when filing taxes in Canada.

I also know the answers from google, but my motive to post here on Canada visa forum was to get clarification, because many Canadian citizens travel or live abroad, if anyone had lived or have more knowledge then I can be 100 % sure regarding stay. if any doubt. Well I think, everyone post here before searching on google.

Hi thanks for information and clarification, my wife and son will not be working in India, neither will be having any income.

They can live anywhere in the world as long as they like without affecting their Canadian citizenship.

However, other things have residency requirements - the big one is healthcare. They will lose Canadian healthcare after a certain number of days abroad, and will only get it back after coming back to Canada and living for a certain period of time (typically six months to lose it, and 3 months to get it back, but check the rules in your province)

Another big one is education. Your children may not get resident rates for college etc if they are not actually resident.

So while your citizenship is never affected, there are many services and benefit programs that will be affected, and you should check up on these rules before you move away for a long time.

Sure, all that makes sense. Just make sure you aren't surprised by some odd rule, so do your research (as you are doing). Taxes are the other thing, someone already mentioned that.

Search for "Canadian expats" + "healthcare" ,"education" etc. There are thousands of expats living in the US, Europe, etc, and there's a lot of information out there.

After applying Canada Citizenship, Can I live in India for 8-9 months, while waiting for citizenship test date email, or test date (usually takes 8-9 months for processing and issuing citizenship test date) and will come back and write citizenship test, I already have been living as Canada permanent resident for 3 years completely, and I think I will not get any issue for next 8-9 months only absence from Canada (staying out of Canada).

Yes you can live in India for 8-9 months while waiting for citizenship, come before the test date and attend and then on the Oath day.
