Hi everyone. I have a friend from India who wishes to obtain PR in Canada. He has a bachelor's degree in computer science from a reputed college in India and has 5-6 years of work experience, currently he's 29 years of age. The thing is, he wishes to change his stream and go into Hospitality Management. For this, he wants to study a 2 year Hospitality Management course from Canada. He has been wondering if after completion of course and upon earning PGWD, will he become eligible to apply for PR? His main concern is since he is changing streams (from comp sci. to hospitality management), will he still be able to obtain a study permit and become eligible for PR or does he have to stick to computer science stream so his PR doesn't get denied due to the shift in streams?

Thank you.

He is unlikely to get approved for a hospitality degree if he has a degree in CS. He has a much better chance of getting a good job that will qualify for him for PR if pursues further education in CS.

Thank you for a quick response. I think his main reason for career shift is due to his personal desire and Hospitality Management is something he has always wanted to do. Unfortunately due to unfavorable and abrupt circumstances within family, he had to take up computer science and then a job right after to support his family. His financial situation is rather sound now thus he wanted to pursue what he originally desired.

It is unfortunate if there is no way for him to get approved for a hospitality degree.

Not impossible but it will be difficult the career prospects and earning potential are significantly better in CS. Not sure what kind of hospitality he wants to work in but many don’t actually need a degree to work in the field.

Hello, thanks for responding. Is there any chance for him to go with his plan for a PR (getting approved first)?
That depends if he's eligible for Federal Skilled Worker and meets the CRS score to get an Invitation to Apply in Express Entry.
From what you describe, it sounds like it's possible for him to get PR first--but a lot depends on his IELTS scores and his ECA outcome.

Right now, the minimum to get an ITA is about 450+.

If he gets PR and then opts to study after PR...there are no barriers to him selecting a course. Tuition will be much cheaper and he can qualify for domestic loans and grants.

PS: So many concerned "friends" asking for their friends' cases on this forum lately. I wouldn't do any of this for my friends. Maybe that means I'm a bad friend.
