Hi,

My partner and I are looking to come to Canada from the UK (specifically Stockport, England) to work next year for 6 months if possible.

She is an office manager in credit control with 7 years recurring experience and I am a customer service and complaints handler (contractor) with experience dealing with both general and executive high level complaints.

What are the odds that without unsecured employment we would be able to do this?

I know that part of the process is to prove you can support yourself for the six months, which we could but how much money does the Canadian government believe is required to support yourself for this time?

Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You will need to look into the IEC / Working Holiday Visa program.

You require a work permit to work in Canada. The biggest challenge to your plans is getting that work permit. The above program is your only realistic means for obtaining such a work permit (assuming you are the right age and meet the requirements). Note that the UK IEC / Working Holiday Visa program is always oversubscribed (meaning there are more applicants than spots available). You will want to enter the pool as soon as it opens in November or December and hope you are both selected (individuals are selected out of the pool randomly).

My partner is eligible for IEC as she has an Irish passport. She's 32 and I believe for Irish passport holders the scheme runs until 35 but sadly I am too old for this.

Would I have no chance of joining her on a separate VISA should I apply when I am in Canada? Would doing volunteer work help our cause?

Thanks.

If you are married or common law (common law means that you have lived together continuously for at least one full year), then once she moves to Canada and has started a skilled job (NOC A, B or 0) and can provide three pay slips to prove this, you qualify to apply for an spousal open work permit linked to her work permit.

Volunteer work will not help your cause.

Luckily for us, my partner is a financial credit controller which I believe comes under "type 0".

So assuming she starts a skilled job and gets 3 payslips, what does this mean for a "spousal open work permit".

Does it mean that if I am successful in my application (linked to hers) that I would then be free to apply for jobs that meet LMIA criteria?
