I'm a US citizen and my boyfriend and I want to get married in Canada. I would go back home to Texas after and he would start the paperwork to sponsor me. We want to do everything right but I'm wondering what kind of paperwork or Visa would we need to legally get married in Canada. I have searched and searched for information.
Can we get married over there then I go back home like I have done before until the permanent residency is done?

If you've never been married before - then you really only need a valid ID. It's pretty straight forward. Each province has a slightly different process for getting a marriage license. I would recommend you google: "getting married in <province name>" to find out what specific process you will use.

I am a widow so I would provide death certificate and he was common law married so I'm guessing he would need his separation paperwork .

My husband came over to Canada from the UK for us to get married, we got married in Ontario. There, we each needed 2 pieces of ID, had to pay the fee, and fill in a form (we got married in Ottawa so went to city hall there to fill it in). In Ontario, you will need 2 witnesses for the ceremony, and the marriage license is valid for 90 days, there's no minimum amount of time you need to file in advance. Some provinces will also require you to give the details of the officiant and location of the wedding when you apply for the license. You will have to wait a bit before you can request the marriage certificate (it's like 10 weeks for Ontario). There's no special visa, my husband entered with eTA like he would normally to visit Canada on a British passport. As suggested, just look up "marriage license [province name]" and you'll see the specifics that are required for where you intend to get married. Good luck!!
