Hi-

My husband and son (both PRs) and I are currently living in the US. We've found out I am pregnant and due to work logistics will not be able to move to Canada for the birth of this child. SO I find myself again in the position of sponsoring someone. With a newborn, is it the same sponsorship process as when I did my husband/son? Is it better if I start it now outland (we will likely move to Toronto before it's complete but after the baby is born) or should we just wait until we move and do inland then? For the duration of time that we are in Canada before this babies PR comes through, do we have any insurance options? Is it a full cost application?

Thanks so much as we navigate this unexpected/confusing situation.

Thanks!

NB Not to worry about residency requirement for my husband/son, we are all good with that.

Are you a Canadian citizen yourself...?

Same process. There is no inland option for dependent child sponsorship. Start the outland app as as soon you can after the birth.

Health coverage depends on the province.

Got it. Do you know if the cost is the same?

Also, is it ok to complete an Outland app when we are living in Canada? With regards to insurance, province would be Ontario.

Costs detailed on the CIC website, best to go there for latest prices.

Yes, just indicate by how you answer the relevant questions that you are applying for 'outland' and make sure you send it to the address associated with outland processing (different from inland). All on CIC website.

With regards to insurance, province would be Ontario.
OHIP has a 'three months wait' from the date you land for good until you can be insured under OHIP. Readings with 'official' links here:

https://britishexpats.com/wiki/Medical_Insurance-Canada#Ontario

So for those three months you would either need private medical insurance (lots of companies provide this), or of course you can just 'risk it'. Private insurance would want to know all pre-existing conditions, including pregnancy and may well either charge more or exclude coverage for specific conditions. The link I gave above has a list of some of the private insurers.

Thanks for this. So I can apply Outland with a Canadian address for correspondence? Also, my understanding was that Ohip started after three months of landing once you have PR, not three months after landing in general. So theoretically our littlest could be many months without insurance depending how long the PR process takes.

Significantly cheaper. Not all fees apply when sponsoring just a child.

Yes.

Hence why you should apply ASAP after the birth. The app shouldn't take more than 6 months.

Do be aware that OHIP doesn't 'start' as such (perhaps you already know this) - you are not covered until you apply and most places will not provide services under OHIP with seeing a valid card first (saw precisely this at our local walk-in clinic - no card, no Doctor). You MUST apply with all relevant documents and proof of residence etc. at a Services Ontario office, but you can apply in person after say 2.5 months, you don't have to wait until 3 months before turning up at Services Ontario.

My understanding is that we could apply as soon as we got there (had proof of residence) but that it wouldn’t begin for 3 months. It sounds like I have that wrong— we apply three months after getting there and then it begins immediately? I know it’s a three month wait, now just confused on which end.

We will complete full application and just fill in necessary details and submit as soon as child is born. We will start it Outland in US and can always switch the addrsss to one in Toronto if we move before it’s complete. Thanks for this guidance.

You can apply as soon as you have the required proofs, which I suggest you are unlikely to have immediately (although you might). So yes, you can apply in advance of the 3 months wait period. Please do read the link I provided in my earlier post with links to the OHIP site, that tells you what proofs you need and what is accepted.

Baby will only be able to apply for OHIP and start the 3 month wait period if they have been granted PR or have AIP.
