Indian Passport Renewal (BLS Toronto) - Spouse address proof

Hi Everyone!

I have a query which I’m hoping someone here will be able to answer.

I renewed my passport last year (have my spouse’s name added, address printed is that of our place in Toronto).

My spouse’s passport is up for renewal in a few months - Can I use my passport as a valid address proof for their application?

This is allowed in India but I don’t see it listed specifically on BLS’ website.

Hi, I dont have an answer for you. However, I would like to know what documents did you submit for adding your spouse name on the passport? we have the original marriage certificate, however, it is not attested by MEA. Do they accept this document? Thanks

Hey, I submitted the marriage certificate but I have it attested by the MEA. So maybe you can ask at the BLS Centre what needs to be done.

You can give your passport copy + a utility bill or Drivers license (in your name) as address proof. Since your spouse's name is in your passport, this should be good.

Hey, I submitted the marriage certificate but I have it attested by the MEA. So maybe you can ask at the BLS Centre what needs to be done.

Thanks for your reply. I was at the BLS earlier this month and they accepted a copy of my marriage certificate without the MEA Attestation. My documents are now ready for dispatch from the consulate. Hopefully, the documents I submitted should be okay for providing the renewed passport.

Hi all,

Just to provide an update (and possibly closure) - they did NOT accept any “common”
Documents. They wanted proofs in her name and her name only. Though, at PSKs in India they do accept it if all details are updated and match (at least they used to when I last checked).

Luckily, we had our rent agreement with her name as a co applicant and that worked out well. Though this is not written as an accepted document on BLS.

As I’ve seen many times, they write one thing, mean something else and are interpreted differently (by the officers at the passport office/BLS).

It’s always safest to ask them what exactly do they need and not to make any assumptions. As I did, thinking that spouse’s documents should be enough to “link” for address proofs.

Received the passport a few weeks ago.

This information may be handy for someone in the future.

Hi I really need your help .. my passport is expiring in March and I need to travel in April 2020. So I really need to give it for renewal but I don't have any Canadian address proof. Can I use my husband's bank statements ? Thanks. Pls share.
