OHIP waiting period and proof of residence

Hi,

I will be landing in Toronto in about 2 weeks and I am wondering about the OHIP waiting period.

I did a soft landing in october 2018. In february, I will be landing permanently.
But, I will be living in an Airbnb until I find a place to rent. And I will have no job until I find one.
So, I don't know when I will be able to provide the second required document when applying to OHIP, the one they call "Proof of Residency in Ontario".

After reading threads on this forum, I understand that I will have to wait 3 months to become eligible for OHIP.
So I know that I have to find a private health insurance (any recommandation is welcomed) to be covered during this waiting period.
But, my question is, does the waiting period starts when you land in Toronto, or, does it starts when you are able to provide the "Proof of Residency in Ontario" document?

If it starts when you land, then how do you prove your landing date? Is the e-bording pass good enough?

Thanks.

Will start in 2 weeks. Yes boarding pass and airbnb receipts should be fine. You have 3 months to sign up so would recommend you have find permanent housing first an then sign up. The start date will be the same no matter when you sign up during those first 3 months.

So here’s what I’m unclear about. If we soft land in September but move in October, wouldn’t we still meet the 153/183 day residency requirement?
You can only apply when you establish residence, which would be October.

Hello everybody. I hope it is okay if I am using this thread here since I have a similar question. I moved here yesterday as a permanent resident and I am wondering about the proof of residency. My wife and I are living at her parents place and they charge us rent but it is all a verbally agreement so there is not really a contract or anything. Would it be proof of residency enough if we write out a letter stating that we are living here and pay them rent and let it sign by both parties? Or what else could I show as proof of residency? Thank you for your help.

The residency proof options are very clearly listed on the OHIP website.

No airbnb, no hotel, OHIP will NOT accept insufficient documents like that.

If your name is not listed into the lease agreement no other letters will be accepted.

First time applicants best advise mailed bank account statement from savings or checking account ONLY. No visa

Proof of address it is strickly critical for most refusal applications in person of course.

Few more pointers. Leased signed using electronic signatures are sometimes not accepted. Utility bills are accepted. Tenant/Auto Insurance are accepted as proof of residence.

As I said , depends on the person on opposite side of the counter. For me electronically signed lease was accepted, for my wife it was refused and she had to show other address proof.
