Hi All,

I am looking for visitor/traveller insurance policy for my mom coming to Toronto for 2 months February - March. Please advise if there is any cashless treatment policy as mom is senior citizen and has pre conditions.

Most of hospitals at Toronto are very tighy coupled with OHIP and doesnot entertain insurance company direct billiing. Please advise any agent or policy in which insurers have good provider coverage.

Regards,

Travel insurance only covers emergencies and pretty much never covers pre-existing conditions. Expect to pay out-of-pocket for anything to do with pre-existing conditions and all normal doctor visits.

Ok. Lets take an example if person has heart disease then his probability to have attack will be higher. If he take visitor policy then will he not cover for heart attack.

Depends on the policy and the stability of the condition.

Any policy will require the purchaser to declare ALL pre existing conditions including in your example heart disease. Some policies may include cover for some pre existing with a greatly increased premium as insurance companies of course issue policies based on a risk assessment on likelihood of paying out. Often with pre existing declared conditions some companies will consider a policy excluding the condition placing the risk on the purchaser.

By not declaring ANY pre existing condition at time of purchase or even post purchase then if any issue arises cover would be void. Some companies will not pay up even if an event is not related to a pre existing condition that has not been declared.

No - these generally are not covered. You have to pay for any related costs out of pocket. Only emergencies are typically covered.

Some indian insurance companies do cover pre existing ones. Also I've heard that if you buy from Indian , a medical repatriation is also covered. So buying INdian may be cheaper and better i think

True, private medical insurance for Visitors to Canada will only cover medical emergencies. Yet, an "emergency", according to most insurance policies, is a an unexpected sickness or an accidental injury that cannot be reasonably delayed to be treated (as in until insured returns back to their country of permanent residence).

Sickness such as flu, cold and seasonal allergies are not considered emergencies, while, for example, infections and stomach flu are emergencies that are generally covered under private insurance. Plus, private insurance from most Canadian providers offers direct billing for hospitalization services due to emergencies (for overnight hospital stays).

As for pre-existing medical conditions coverage, it would depend on the insurance policy of your choice. Generally, if a pre-existing medical condition is stable (did not require any medical treatment including consultations; and did not require a change in type or dosage of medication, if taken) for at least 180 days (could be less depending on the insurance provider) immediately prior to the start date of your insurance policy, then you can include the coverage for such condition. However, there are certain exclusions to this rule (also depending on the insurance policy) such as a person with a Congestive Heart Failure or someone having both diabetes and a heart condition are not eligible for the insurance at all.

The best thing to do when you are looking around for a suitable policy is to talk with someone who can narrow down the scope of available options.

You can browse through the options and speak with an insurance advisor by following this link - Insurance for Visitors to Canada
