Hi,
I am from Ontario, and since i live in downtown Toronto I dont need to buy a car. Neither I plan to buy it in the coming years. However as said by many people the earlier I get a licence the more I will save in future car insurance premiums.

My question 1, is by just clearing the knowledge test (G1 licence) can I hold that G1 so that I can secure the date of getting the licence as of today. And then in future this will prove I have an old license and then save on insurance. Or only when I clear the first road test (getting a G2) will I be okay?

In short I want to delay the process of getting the next license till as much I can , and just hold a G1 which I can even use as an identity card.

Q 2 ) - If I add my previous country's driving license to my Ontario license at the Drivetest centers, and assuming they accept my decade of driving license (from India) will this decade also be used in future for car insurance premium calculation?

1. You have to take road test
2. Driving License process is different from Insurance one. You will need to convince insurance provider to consider your Indian experience.

1/ Your old license from India won't save anything on insurance, even if you have few decades of experience. If you have proper documents, i.e valid Indian driving license and driving extract from India, you can go from G1 and straight to G road test. The extract needs to be within last 6 months. Being in G1 has no value, only G2 and G counts. TBH, in order to have any meaningful discount on your insurance you need to show that you are G2/G and already covered by some insurance. People who doesn't have coverage more than 6 months are hit with higher premium.

2/ No. India experience doesn't count for insurance.
