Dear all

I really appreciate your advice regarding whether I have to bring

1-all money that I have declared
2- or minimum fund for 1 person
3- or the proof of fund ( bank statement ,etc))
on landing or not ?

You have to bring all the funds as POF . They may ask to see how much you brought. Principal applicant must show all , even if he / she lands alone.

No, not really... lets say I have $100'000, I do not have to bring that amount in. Only the minimum required amount for one, two or whatever number.

It's a good idea to bring proof of funds. They don't have to be actual funds.

If you want to reduce risk, you are welcome to bring the minimum as cash - just be sure to declare it when you cross the border.

Hi Kate -Are you sure bringing a large amount of cash, say about CAD20K is not a problem in airports immigration? I've visited many countries and I always hesitate in answering Yes to any of those questions in the immigration form that they hand over before passport clearance. One question is on cash carried. It might lead to some further questions, a temporary detaining in the airport itself till we answer clearly why so much cash and so on.

I would recommend getting a DD in Canadian dollars and carrying about 2K in cash, not more. We can of course goto a bank and open an account with that DD, and then withdraw anymore using ATMs. Why risk carrying so much money in cash? Whatever might happen..

Yep! Not a problem at all. I've crossed with (and declared) both cash and precious metals.

It's a non-issue in Canada if the funds are declared. Bring a copy of your bank withdrawal receipt, and let them know you are landing. It's really a quick and painless process.

If you watch the Border Security show (there are some episodes on YouTube), people bring cash all the time - one guy had $400,000 worth. It's really, truly, a non-issue. If you have an account with Royal Bank of Canada (or even just want to open one), they have a branch in the airport, so you aren't lugging around that much cash.

Ultimately, it's up to you. If you bring a printout, you run the risk of them having concerns with the proof of funds. If you have the funds with you, there is no question that you have them.

This is Canada, not the US - they aren't looking to shake people down.

We are going to land end of Jan 2016 from HK, having the same problem.

Just check HSBC that the bank can issue a letter stating the money in account on which day. is it acceptable? I think it would be better than just printing monthly statement.
I was thinking to ask hsbc to issue a CAD$ cheque to me. But they said it could not be done. They can only do TT, meaning the money is transfered to another account in Ca.

Any better means if we want to avoid bringing cash.

many thanks.

That would likely work fine. If the bank has a stamp or seal, it can help make it look official. If the bank officer has a business card, he can also staple it to the letter.

The bank teller probably didn't know what he/she talking about! You can ask for a bank draft (for use to deposit in banks outside Hong Kong).

I might be wrong about HSBC HK, but I was able to get the same from other banks such as Bank of China (HK), Hang Seng Bank and Citibank Hong Kong. Not sure why HSBC Hong Kong cannot!

At HSBC Premier, you can also set up a Canadian HSBC Premier/Advance account and get free instant TT between your accounts in different countries.

Yes, a balance certificate from bank is acceptable. You can always withdraw money here at any ATM using your HSBC debit card. Just make sure HSBC have given you an international debit card. using debit card is much more simpler and easier than the hassles of encashing traveler cheques and drafts,

I am planning to land in March 2019 and I have got an HSBC Advance Debit Card. How do I check whether it is an International Debit Card? The card has the PLUS symbol in the backside. I guess that says it's international?

And, I am planning to get 2 months of bank statements and a letter addressed to the High Commission of my country, including my current bank balance. Is that enough?
And, as I said above, I only have the Debit card. Should I get a Credit Card as well? I do not like to get a Credit Card as it would want me to show Credit Card statements also when I land, if the immigration officer ask for those.

Thank you all.

I'm not sure if having a debit card having a "PLUS" symbol in the backside let you use any bank machine internationally but you can use it in Canada.

you can donate money to wikipedia.

if the transaction is successful then the card is international :)
