Hello everyone,
Thanks for taking out time to go thru my request.
I recently landed in Canada (January, 2018) and then after staying for 3 days came back to USA. I am an indian living in US on H1B. In mean time, I started for looking for a job in Canada and just now got one with starting date in March.
So, hopefully my relative in canada receives my PR card by then and mails it to me but on safe side, I want to apply for PRTD as well as the start date is strict and having PRTD (or PR Card) makes things definitive so that I can make some tangible plans to wrap things in USA and move to Canada.

Couple of questions I have..from the application: https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/ircc/migration/ircc/english/pdf/kits/forms/imm5524e.pdf
1) Section 16: While my spouse is also a Canadian Permanent Resident. But she doesnt have a job yet (let alone canadian business). So, what should I fill in section 16. I dont think I will get any days..
2) Photo requirements: I am bit confused by photograph requirements. CIC website suggests 50mmX75mm (https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/ircc/migration/ircc/english/information/applications/guides/pdf/5445eb-e.pdf) but VAC website suggests 35mmX45mm (https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/ircc/migration/ircc/english/pdf/photospecs-e.pdf) which one is it for PRTD.
3) My wife and I are submitting applications separately, do we need to send each others documents.

Also, in terms of permanent residency requirements, I mean I just got the residency in January.. So there is no way I can fulfill the 730 days requirements. So, I do not know how to demonstrate this requirement. How should I plea my case?

If this doesnt work out, can I cross the US-Canadian Border via private car and use the landing confirmation document?
Thanks

You are in compliance with the 730 days (in 5 years from landing date) until you're mathematically unable to achieve 730 days in those first 5 years. So you're fine on that count. Some new PRs land and then go back to their home countries for up to a few years before settling in Canada. It is always good to have many days buffer though.

In my opinion, I think it would be much less of a hassle to enter Canada at a land crossing in a private vehicle than apply for a PRTD which can take several weeks - or in some cases, months.

Yes. your COPR is enough for CBSA to let you in. People have recently posted using Lyft to get driven across the border into Canada - at least in Windsor, Ontario. Not sure where your final Canadian destination is but flying to Buffalo, NY, Bellingham, WA, Minot, ND or Grand Forks, ND (via Minneapolis, MN) are also possible options of US border cities to fly into and then drive to the border.

I'm unsure about the answers to your questions regarding the PRTD itself.

Land crossings also include Ferry crossings (I think - someone can correct me if I'm wrong) and so Seattle to Vancouver or whichever ports in Eastern Canada may also be options.

Interesting.. I am actually thinking of driving into canada in my car. But I just thought having something like PR or PRTD will just help me simply execute my plan to move to Canada.
Last thing I want is quit my job in USA (and hence loose my H1B status) and reach Canada border only to be not allowed because I do not have these documents and the guy in Canadian border was having a bad day :-/

COPR and passport is all you need to get in at a land crossing.
The reason you can't fly on a COPR or use other Commercial transportation is because the airline won't let you, not because Canada won't let you. If you can reach CBSA with COPR, then as a PR you have every right to enter Canada

Just thought. Ferry is commercial. You won't be able to use COPR there. My post above is edited.

There is a process to export your car from USA and import it into Canada. Lots of paperwork that in most cases you may just want to try to sell it before moving. I'll let you explore that though. There are some threads about that sort of thing.

Hello!

I have a query. I will be landing in Toronto on 1st Feb, 2019 and would have to leave for India in a week and since by then I wouldn't be getting PR card, will have to apply PRTD from India.
My question :
1. I have seen in forums where people share that for their PRTD application they attached documents like canada bank statements, SIN etc. So what all documents we should submit and what do these documents justify considering short stay in Canada?

Kindly help!

Thank you.

Hi All,

Requesting some guidance on PRTD- New Immigrant

I am going to land in Canada on 18th Nov and will apply for PR card. I need to leave for India on and around 20th Jan'2019 (for 3 weeks) and return back to Canada. I am not expecting the PR card to arrive by that time (although I would try to expedite since I have a to leave Canada on account of my wedding).

My question:

1. How to apply for PRTD in India (Kolkata center)- In person or by mail? If need to take appointment to apply in person, how to schedule that?
2. How long does it take approximately to get PRTD?
3. Is anyone able to open the latest document checklist for PRTD? Not opening for me.

Anyone going through this situation? Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Jordo,

I'm in the same situation. Quick thought here is i'm going to fly to Montana and rent an Alamo car to cross the border at Sweet Grass MT to enter Canada. Do you know if a rental car is considered a commercial vehicle? I will not bring my own car to Canada.

Been waiting for my PR card for so long and the process is really slow. And I will need to leave the US for Canada by the end of this month.

Hello Frazman007, did you end up driving your car to cross the border? Any issue with the CBSA when you show them your passport and COPR? I have been waiting for my PR card for so long and may have to drive through the border with my COPR and Passport, now sure 100% if I can get back to Canada safe and sound. My H1B is expired by the end of this month and I will need to leave the US. Please let me know your feedback. Thanks

I was able to drive to Canada but I did had a PRTD. I am not sure whether they checked it or not because if you have COPR, its pretty clear that you are a permanent resident but I am not sure.
I would say just apply for PRTD asap and then you should be golden.

I have driven the rental car across the border and it should not be an issue.

Hello @frazman007 :

How did you resolve the above questions? I made my first entry in Canada back in March 2020, and intend to move there permanently in March 2021. The thing is I wasn't told at the border to update my mailing address on IRCC website, as I thought I already provided them with my mailing address. I haven't received my PR card yet, and upon inquiring, I was told that my PR card application has been abandoned (since more than 6 months have passed since my first landing), and I need to apply for a new PR card (by submitting a new application, fees and photographs).

Were you just able to enter using CoPR? Or were you required to apply for PRTD?

Thank you for your help in advance

@maverick2020 I haven't been able to resolve this entirely. But based on some investigations, it looks like I will need to apply for PRTD from USA. This can be done via VFS office. You could reach out to them directly to understand the process. At this time, they are accepting only email applications. Once your PRTD is approved, you will need to send your passport to VFS, who will further pass along your passport and/or other documents to Canadian Embassy in USA.

Thanks for your response, as per this thread of mine, folks are suggesting that if you travel by road COPR is enough

@maverick2020 : Yes, I also read the same thing on few threads, but some people on some threads have also cautioned me against using CoPR for entering Canada by road. So, I thought of applying for PRTD. Also, another thing is my CoPR expired in October 2020. So, I am not sure if I can use my CoPR.

In any case, are you also based in USA and travelling to Canada by road? If yes, are you planning to apply for PRTD? Or just planning to use CoPR?

P.S: From your thread, I notice that you also got a response from IRCC stating that the address was never updated (same thing happened with me). This is kind of silly that even after providing mailing address during 'soft landing', they are claiming that we never provided any address. Note that I entered with my wife, and she got her PR card with the mailing address provided during soft landing.

Thanks
Ajeya
