Steps to export the vehicle from USA to Canada...

US CBP won't even know if you move your car as you won't be going to any US office on your way out.

I had moved to Canada for 13 months on Work Permit in 2015. I did thorough research back then. US had introduced this AES system and not many people ( even movers) knew how to work with it so I decided to skip "export from US" part as it was not mandatory for me. I directly went to Canada checkpost and "temporarily" imported my car into Canada. Registered my car in Canada and exchanged my DL.

In 2016, I moved back to USA. I showed up at US check post and told them that I moving my car from Canada to US. I was directed to secondary inspection/customs area ( things are hazy as its been 2 years). Their I showed my Original bill of sale ( from the time I purchased car in US) and received CBP 7501(?). Went to DMV, showed CBP 7501 and got my car registered in US.

By the way, keep a copy of title with you as in Canada you will surrender registration+title and will only get registration in return. Their is no concept of title in Canada ( as far as I know). This will help you if you decide to move back car to US. I had shown Original bill of sale but CBP prefers to see car title.

Tagging @technokedar as he might be moving to Canada on work permit.
Again, thanks for a quick and insightful reply. I am planning to prepare the export docs as a 'just in case' scenario and send them at least 72 hours in advance. If, at the time of crossing the border, CBP decides not to export the vehicle, then that's good and if they say we have to export it, at least I will be on a safer side of having the required documents. This is a conservative approach and I will spend some money on a broker too. Thanks for the advice on Title.
Btw, I am moving in Toronto area. How did you register your car on a 'temporary' import?

Again, I am reading this topic back and forth and still trying to figure out the best course of action for us. The car is Titled to my spouse, who is going to be landing soon. We prefer to do export/import procedure later with the car listed in the "goods to follow".

- My spouse after landing in Canada will not be able to enter USA back to do export. Can I, her husband (dual citizen), do all export/import on her behalf using "Generic Power of Attorney" after her landing ?

- Right now the car is US plated, US insured and US registered. As of now I, as US resident, am driving this car back and forth during my visits to Canada. Is it a bad idea to drive the car to Canadian border during landing, tell CBSA that the car will be imported later and enter the Canada? Or should we avoid showing the car (which will be exported/imported later) at the border during landing process?

Hi,

Does anyone know if the owner has to be present at the time of exporting the car from the US? Would it work if I provide a signed document authorizing to a friend of mine who may then perform this procedure on my behalf?

I am currently in Canada on work permit and will soon be converting to PR. I did a temporary import in Canada (and no export from US) a year ago. I was planning on making a trip to the US to get the export formalities done, but my B1 visa got rejected. Can the expert members of the forum please advise?

Thank you.

I emigrated to Ontario last week and imported my car. Got it inspected and got my Ontario license. Got hung up registering the car as the title is in both my wife's name and mine and she's still in the US. I was going to drive back to NY to pick her up next week. Can I return with the car to the US? It has been exported to Canada but is still registered in the US until my wife can come with me to Service Ontario to complete the registration.

Hi, don't do that. You can't take the car back to the U.S. without first registering it here in Canada as it has been marked exported by U.S. customs. Rent a car if you can to do the round trip. As you have an ON license now, you should be fine renting a car.

How do you use AES Direct / ACE to export your vehicle?
I cannot even register on ACE. It asks for Company information EIN number etc. assuming I am a trader or an exporter. Has anyone actually used the ACE/AESdirect system to register and generate the ITN ??

On the RIV website what does one fill under foreign vendor information ?

HELP PLEASE! I am planning to export a car from US to Canada. I am NOT a former US resident and currently a Canada PR. I am buying the car from a private person (my relative residing in US).

Please enlighten me.

1. Is it ok if the title is NOT under my name? I will have a bill of sale and authorization letter to export the vehicle.

2. After we finish the export process, can we immediately drive back to the US? The american owner is coming with us. We are doing the export at Toronto but I am residing in Calgary. We prefer to take the US route to Calgary AFTER the export process.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

I think it's Ok, so long as you have the authorization letter or no objection by the title holder.

There is error in your statement. You cannot do the export at Toronto. You need to start the export process at least 3 days before you cross. You need to have ITN number. After that at the US side you simply export your car at the border. they stamp on your title exported. Once you land in Canada as a PR you need to declare that you are importing a vehicle. Since you are coming for the first time as a settler, you don't need to pay any taxes or import duties. I hope you have included the car on your goods to follow list when you first landed as PR, else you'll have to pay Import Duty on the current book value of the vehicle.
Once Imported, you'll need to take your car to Canadian Tire or elsewhere to get it tested. Once you pay RIV fees and get it tested, then you need to go to ServiceOntario or ServiceAlberta in your case to get it registered and get the license plate.
I don't know about the part if you can drive back to USA after you have exported. Best to google it.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Kuchbhi, I am not landing for the first time and I did not declare it when I landed. Hence, I will pay the taxes.
