I rented a 10 ft U Haul Truck that cost me around 1400 USD, one way from US to Canada. Mine was around 1300 miles move.
Hi, I have a similar plan to hire a U Haul and drive down to CN, but i intend to take my car as well (Still need to figure out the driving modalities though). Any particular reason why you did not take you car along into CN?
Also, do you mind sharing the domain you work in? (Purely from assessing the job prospects as I m a core Java developer with 11 yrs exp)

Sure. The main reasons for me not to take the car with me were personal financial and I wanted to avoid the headache of export and import.
I am also in IT, mainly functional roles and manufacturing domain. In my case, my current employer transferred me to their Canada division. For me it was a bit difficult finding the exact matching job since mine is a very niche area (PLM). If you are a Java developer with this much experience I am pretty sure you will be able to find a lot of openings. Especially if you are open to contracts.

Hi All,

I got my COPR in September last year and I did a soft landing with my spouse in October. At that time, we showed the list of goods to follow but they did not stamp/enter it in the system because we didnt have the appraisal for jewelry. The officer said we had upto a year to get that list registered. We came back after 2 weeks and since then we are waiting for the PR card.
My current employer has a project in Vancover and was wondering if i could travel there next week on COPR and cross the border via rental car.
Will there be any problems if i did that?
Also will it impact the list of goods to follow since i havent had the time to get appraisal yet.

Thanks!

You should not face any problems. If you do not have time to get appraisal then you can just take colored photographs of jewelry. I did same when I moved to Canada on work permit for an year and CBSA agents did not raise any concerns.

I had also taken colored pics for the jewelry but they wanted appraisals also :(
Now i just want to go for a quick trip but want to be really sure i can cross in a rental car with just the COPR before i attempt it.

Yes. You can. I am in same situation ( done with landing, No PR cards, only Passport + COPR) and planning a short trip from USA to Quebec in a rental car in next few months.

You can definitely use any personal mode of transportation like your car, rental car etc for travel with passport and copr. PRTD is required only if you take public transport like flight , bus etc.

Hey Guys,
I have already done my PR landing and now have a valid COPR. As i don't have my PR card, I am planning to drive and move permanently from Chicago to Toronto and won't be coming back to the US. I plan to sell most of my stuff in the US, so getting a U haul doesn't make sense.
I called up Avis Car rental and they have a service which allows to drive the rental from Chicago airport and drop it at Toronto airport. I am planning to move my remaining stuff and just have the car for a day, which i will be dropping on the same day at Toronto airport, when i cross the border. Will i have any problem driving the US plated rental car to Canada. I would obviously have the agreement which might show that i will be dropping the car at Toronto airport the same day.
Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Prateek

I am a landed PR with no PR card. I recently did a 1 day trip to Montreal in rental car. You can drive US plated rental car in Canada. It's allowed. Do check with Avis if they will give you insurance card for Canada. When I booked car with rental it was showing that I need to ask for Canadian insurance from rental agency and I will get it for free. When I asked rental agency at the time of pickup they told me that they have never heard of any such thing. When I crossed border CBSA agent did not ask me to show registration and insurance of the rental car.

It's standard practice, just show rental agreement if they ask and that's it. US auto insurance u see usually also covers Canada but you have to make sure they do. Mine did, when i travelled for pleasure and work.

Hello,
Does anyone knows the process of importing car from US if we are planning to move to Canada on W1 Work Permit for a shorter period say 2yrs.
