Hello all,

Is there any way to get the police certificate from FBI quickly, I hear that it takes somewhere between 16-18 weeks. Is it true?

This is for the citizenship application, can I submit the application and just submit the proof of requesting police certificate and when it arrives submit it as well?

Please guide..

I've been waiting 12 weeks so far for my FBI thing to come back (since mid-July), & I'm not sending my citizenship application to CIC/IRCC without it. There's no expedited process at the FBI that I know of. When it does come, I'm going to send mine in with my citizenship application all as one single package. Last time (PR application), I sent all of my police certificates in afterwards and CIC lost my FBI one, writing to me giving me 30 days to send them another one.

What documents are required?
Refer to the Document Checklist (CIT 0007) (PDF, 308.02 KB) to assist you in gathering the necessary documentation.

Note: If any of the required documents are missing, or photocopies are not clear, your application will be returned to you.
This is an optional request. If you fail to provide then write a letter explaining why. If the officer is not satisfied with the excuse he/she will ask to send the certificate within 30 or 60 days. But it will not be retuned. Unless he failed to provide after the request period from the officer.

No, the condition is “ if you are unable to obtain it from some country” then you can write that letter , not “if you don’t have it now but you will have it in a few months”

I did not say it is not important. I said the application will not be retuned back. It will go through non routine process which might ultimately be retuned but if The PC is not sent or the explaination was weak then the officer will ask you to provide it within a certian period of time but will not be retuned immediately.

No it will be retuned as clearly stated

Yep...
My opinion.

You will click/mention on the application that you spent days abroad, because you have to. If the person doing preliminary checks sees that and there is no police certificate with it, application will be deemed incomplete (may be may be not, no one knows).

If it goes through you'll be asked to provide one by the immigration officer, pretty much same delays.

I'll just get the certificate and be done with it, annoying but no other way unfortunately.

I don't think there is an urgent processing for the USA clearance.

now that the timeline has changed do they still want us to send a police certificate when you were out more than 180 days in the last 4 years. how was it before Bill C24? was it 180 in the past 3 years from applying?

There was NO police certificate required for citizenship applications made prior to a June 2015 version of the application form. Applicable prohibitions time period for foreign convictions continues to be FOUR years. Thus, it is not likely there will be any change in who must submit a police certificate (except the item will likely be renumbered given other changes in the form).

Explanation:

Again, there was NO police certificate requirement for citizenship applicants prior to June 2015. What changed was the addition of a prohibition provision in the Citizenship Act, Section 22(3)(a), which took effect in May 2015, adding the prohibition for convictions outside Canada in the four years preceding the date of the application. See this at http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-29/page-6.html#docCont This provision, this prohibition, has not been amended by any subsequent legislation.

In particular, the prohibition time period continues to be the preceding four years.

Thus, a change in the criteria for who must submit a police clearance with the application is NOT likely.

Some change is nonetheless possible. Indeed, IRCC could remove the police certificate requirement altogether, since all applicants must otherwise affirm they have no convictions abroad in the preceding four years. OR IRCC could revise the criteria. So, applicants need to wait to see what the new form actually includes and follow the new instructions.

Odds are high, however, that the current police certificate instructions and requirement will still apply and be included in the new form, which should be available by some time on October 12, perhaps late in the day October 11 (noting that when the transition to the 4/6 rule took effect, June 11, 2015, as I recall it took a little longer than that to get the new presence calculator online).

Thanks for your explanation, they will probably keep the police certificate, one effective way for CIC to delay the CTZ process, and just like you said it has not been amended. It takes forever though to get it and since we already provide one in the PR process they should really remove this from
citizenship

I have a dumb question: when my FBI all-clear thing does come back (hopefully either this/next week, based on others' experiences on here), I can open the envelope to read it and photocopy it for my own records, yes? Or should we send police certificates in to CIC/IRCC still sealed in their respective envelopes, unopened?

We would be applying for Canadian citizenship according to new time criteria. I was travelling to US for last 2 years for work related assignments and have certainly exceeded the 180 days criteria and will need the PCC from FBI. My questions are:
1. Can I apply for FBI PCC before I fill up the citizenship form? or do we need application number to get the PCC from FBI?
2. One of the Authorised fingerprinting service provider in Toronto has assured that they provide expedited FBI clearance certificate.( within 2 to 3 business days) for additional charge. Has anyone used such service and is it advisable?

Please guide. Thanks you!

I think its only for US PRs and citizens, but if there is a place that does it faster other than that, I would love to hear it

Hey all,
I am a PR who moved to Canada from the States on July 9th 2014. One of the requirements to move to Canada was to submit a FBI background check, It was submitted right before I got my PR card. Now that I am eligible for the citizenship, I am trying to figure out if I need to submit another FBI background check . it would make no sense because the longest I have been outside of Canada was no more than 2 weeks and it was once and just 3 or 4 trips for a few days in the states . Do I still need to submit a FBI background check ?
On cic website, they are talking about long trips ..it`s doesn`t apply to me but the fact that I have been here for 3 years and prior to that I was in the states although a background check was submitted...not sure if it applies to me or not . anyone has been in the same situation ?
Thanks.
