Hello all,

I'm currently on the US F1/OPT status, nearing the end of my legal stay in the US (Aug'2017). As of now, I am awaiting my Canadian Permanent Resident Travel Documents, so I can resettle there after my visa is expired here. I have 60 days from the end of august, to move all my stuff from the USA (Ohio to be exact) to Canada (Ontario to be exact). My main concern for this post, was the issues with driving over to Canada with all my stuff after the expiration of my current US driver's license. I have had a US driver's license for more than 2 years, and car insurance for 1.5+ years. But my current license expires end of august (alongside my visa status). So my question is:

1) What are my options for having a legal driver's license from Canada, in case I want to drive over, say in the middle of September? (At this point, my US driver's license will be expired, but I will have legal status as a Canadian PR)

2) What are the things I need to take care of if I want to transfer my insurance from a US to a Canadian company (documents etc.)

1) Drivers license - You need a valid drivers license in the US to get a full Ontario G license. You also need a Ohio drivers extract which lists the original date your OH license was issued.

Also Ontario drivers license is not issued until you start living in the state and you show proof of residence.

2) You need US insurance history for several years. Contact your current insurance company and they can provide you a letter.

Hi,
1. I don't think you can drive with an expired license in US or Canada. it's risky to say the least. Are you almost done with the PR process? I was in the same situation as you, my OPT was expiring and I needed legal status so I enrolled in school in Michigan and got CPT so I continued working and was able to renew my license. The program is flexible if it's something you're interested in.

2. If your insurance covers Canada as well you can speak to an agent and get a new policy in Canada. If not you can always get a new policy with a different company in Canada. Just make sure to request a certificate or records from US insurance so as to lower your rates when you get to Canada
