I landed in 2009. Started with RBC. Got annoyed with them in under one week. Pure stupidity. Ended up with TD. I also bank with scotia (for a business).

I have noticed that all the banks have started focusing more on developing immigrant friendly services as this is essentially the only growth market left in Canada, so you will probably be able to find some version of this from all the majors.

All round I am not a particular fan of any of the banks in Canada. Banks in Canada are not really interested in doing business, but very happy to keep as much of your money as possible. They want to be vaults rather than banks. If you are accustomed to open minded and often reasonable banking, you will probably find it a little frustrating in Canada.

With that said.
Here are my views on the three I have done business with :

RBC.
Fairly expensive, banking fees are somewhat high. Service is less than impressive. Personal banking is not terrible for people that have been here for a while, but expect challenges with getting unsecured (and even secured credit). I have no experience with their business banking.

TD
They were very helpful when I arrived. I was able to get the things I needed including (guaranteed credit card, mortgage subject to large deposit (even as a workpermit holder not PR.). They also have some no fee option banking. Not a great business bank, but at a personal level though I am not exceptionally happy with them, I still bank with them. Service is not much better than RBC, but for personal banking I have found them reasonably helpful.

Scotia
Service is pretty decent. Accounts options are fairly inexpensive, though they do not seem to have no fee options. They are interested in getting business, but I found that they are mostly interested in more wealthy clients (if you really want anything). They are excruciatingly risk averse. Even secured credit can be very hard to get from them. And business services, consultants are knowledgeable and somewhat helpful though seems if you are looking for banking outside of the Canadian mold. forget it.

My best suggestion is to consider personal convenience and cost first. You will have challenges no matter which bank you bank with.

For foreigner personal banking (at least until you have built you credit history here, I would probably suggest TD is the best. For business banking. Still have not really figured out which bank is the best. It is challenging, complicated and painful, no matter how good a client you are.

Good luck.

I am landing in Toronto on 30th January and after doing research decided to open a Chequing account with TD post landing as they are offereing no fee for 6month . Is it possible to transfer funds from my Indian ICICI account to TD account post landing ? will that be a best option or converting cash to CAD or travellers cheque would be a best option ?

And am i wrong in choosing TD? as i am newcomer i use banks only for daily transactions and in India there is no monthly fee. Is there any bank without monthly fee. Please advise

We plan to open a RBC account mainly because of its offer of credit card (with 1% cash rebate and no annual fee) and safety deposit box.

Hi Vichu,

Yes it is possible to transfer funds to any of your account in Canada through wire transfer but there are charges that are levied for conversion by both the Indian bank as well as the Canadian bank (some of them) for the transfer.

Also, a lot of banks offer the no fee to maintain an account with their bank if you retain a minimum balance in your account.

If you wish to know more, register on nextstopcanada.ca/ , it was really very helpful when I had a number of queries and question before coming like just 3 months ago.

Best Regards,
Riyan

Hey guys.

I've been reading and reading and looks like they are all, in fact, pretty much the same.

I am not in Canada yet - planning the move at the moment - but I decided to go with Scotiabank. Mainly two things: Seems reasonable to have a no fee unlimited regular transactions if you keep a certain amount in the chequing account.

If I find then annoying in a certain timeframe (a year maybe?), I move. Thats not a definite decision anyways.

TD would have given you a 6 month All Inclusive free account. After 6 months, you can maintain a minimum balance, just like you do in India, and have your account fees waived. How much you need to maintain depends on the which accounting package you are on. I use their top most All Inclusive banking plan, which is normally $29.95 a month. I maintain 5K balance to get it waived.

Also, the only way to transfer funds directly from ICICI account to TD account is Wire/Swift transfer. But you need to personally visit your branch, fill up a form and provide ID and other stuff. Guess you are already in Canada, so that won't be possible.

Other option is to use your ICICI debit card to withdraw money from ATM machines here, and then deposit that to your TD account.

I used this approach as I found it more convenient to simply use my Indian debit card to withdraw exactly how much I required.
But check for any overseas withdrawal fees associated to your account. I have a "No fee whatsoever" account in India as well. So it was an easy option for me.

I started with Scotia as they have the branch close to my office, offering also safe deposit box, and after five years, I am still with them.

I pay no monthly fees, when keeping account balance above the $3500. After some time you can apply for up to 4 % cashback Visa which is nice. But for purchases abroad I still use the credit cards from my old country. Canadian banks charge those ridiculous 2.5 % foreign conversion fee which is a daylight robbery.

Otherwise all big banks are exactly the same - ING used to be a lot different, but is was consumed by Scotia, and is now just a little bit different.

Sending money to/from Canada via banks is expensive. Doesn't matter in which direction.

No, it's not. Sending money between HSBC same name accounts to/from Canada is free via Globalview. You are right doesn't matter which direction.

Anyone have experience with obtaining unsecured credit card as a work permit holder?

BMO offered me a secured credit card with a $500 deposit

I bank with PC but they rejected my application despite being with them for 1.5 years

No, I don't. I suppose you can talk to a HSBC branch in the US for details.

Only references to the HSBC bank in my old country are reports about the tax evasion that HSBC did for some of its rich clients. No HSBC branches or representatives there.

I can send any amount of money to any account within Europe for only 50 cents of fix fee. It is ridiculous how high the costs are when sending money between Europe and Canada.

A lot has been said in this thread already and I wanted to give my 2 cents as well.

I bank with TD and RBC both and personally like TD as best.
Reasons:
- They have better customer service attitude and I am always taken care of better in TD than RBC
- RBC Is costly. They operate upon the number of products you have with them. If you are planning to have multiple products (Day to day banking acc, Credit card, Mortgage) with RBC, you might get a free chekings account. Else there's a fee associated with it.
- With TD, if you can keep $5K balance with them, you can get your account upgraded to All-Inclusive account. This gives you multiple facilities (unlimited transaction checkings account, Free TD credit card - based on your rating, free safety deposit box - if its available).
- TD Bank is open for longer hours than any other bank so its more accessible in odd hours

Any bank will give you the Credit card these days. If they dont, ask for secured Card and convert it to higher one in a year or so when your relation with bank improves with time.

Hope it helps.

Need a safety deposit box so plan to open an account at RBC which offers free small box. How can I make sure the branch I go to open account has safety deposit box available?

To check availability, call them directly. Only way.
