Hi All,

I haven't received my PR Card yet, however with COPR I got a new SIN Card and health card.

I had filed the taxes using my old SIN #.

Once you have your COPR (completed landing & signed by Border Security Officer), you have to go to Service Canada along with your COPR and old SIN Card. They will issue you a new Permanent SIN #, and you would get the card in 10 days.

Service Canada sends the information to CRA and your SIN Numbers would be merged. Its done in the back-end, you are not involved in this back-end process, process might take about 2-3 months.

If CRA records are updated with NEW SIN #, then you need to file your taxes using NEW SIN #. If CRA records are not updated yet, you need to use your OLD SIN#.

If your NEW SIN# is updated in CRA Records and if you are trying file your taxes using OLD SIN# by E-File or NETFILE, or vice-versa, it will not recognize the SIN # and it would throw an error message.

To check the status call CRA to verify if they have their new SIN # or not. OR Try logging into your CRA Account (if you have one), after login it would say, you have applied for New SIN #, please register again using new SIN # and it will not allow you to continue to browse through your account information.

Hope this helps...
Good Information, Thank You

Thank you for the information. I guess that is why the bank said it takes a while for CRA to merge my SIN.

I just went through all this too. Service Canada were fine with giving me a new SIN with just showing them the COPR and my old SIN.

She gave me the temporary piece of paper with the new sin number and I got my new sin card in the mail a week later.

The lady at service canada actually told me I could do my taxes for 2013 with either the old or new sin number as they would be linked but I recently found out that isn't the case, as was mentioned in other posts, when I tried to use my old SIN number for taxes it errored out so I had to use my new sin. I called CRA just to make sure they have it linked to my old number as all my t4's have my old sin number on them. So it should all be linked fine in their system.

I've sent an application for a new health card as my old one will expire in a couple months and still haven't heard anything back from them. I'm not sure if they want the PR card, it said on the form the COPR was appropriate documentation but I'm not sure what's going as as they have the whole new photo card now, I assume it makes it a little more complicated.

They won't give you a drivers licence without the official PR card either. Seems silly to me the COPR is an official immigration document, the wait for the PR card creates a big hold up for these things, but hopefully they are speeding up the process.

Anyway seems like your questions were answered, just thought I'd throw my experience in there too :)

i did try to with my copr but service canada said that i need to wait for the PR card. apparently PR applications submitted from within canada, you need the PR card before you can renew the sin and health card. its in service canada website too:
Permanent residents
You must provide one of the following primary documents:
Permanent Resident Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This is the only acceptable document if your claim was processed in Canada.

Incorrect. Checkout this http://www.esdc.gc.ca/en/reports/sin/apply.page

Permanent residents must submit one of the following documents:

a Permanent Resident Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC);
a Confirmation of Permanent Residence issued by CIC, accompanied by either a travel document (for example, a foreign passport) or an alternate photo identification issued by a provincial/territorial authority (for example, a driver's licence). Note: The Confirmation of Permanent Residence is acceptable if used within one year of the date you became a permanent resident. The Permanent Resident card is required after this period;
a Record of Landing issued by CIC before June 28, 2002;
a Verification of Landing issued by CIC. This document is only acceptable to amend a SIN record or to obtain confirmation of an existing SIN; or
a Status Verification or Verification of Status issued by CIC. This document is only acceptable to amend a SIN record or to obtain confirmation of an existing SIN.

After the SIN change can I still file taxes electronically or do I have to submit paper copies?
