Children's eligibility for citizenship (before 4 years of residency)

Hi Members,
I got letter for my Citizenship Oath today and will be taking up the oath in next couple of days. My wife children (who are less than 14 years) old still need to complete their four (4) years of residency along with my wife. My wife is waiting to complete her four (4) years as well.
If I become citizen, can I apply for my children citizenship or shall I submit their application with my wife once she completes her time period.
Thanks,
Liz

This is only my understanding of how citizenship for minors works. I think, if you are a legal parent, you can apply for the children at any point, and could have done so at the same time as you applied for yourself. Now that your application is finished, you have to wait until you take the oath. If you are not a legal guardian of the children, you can't apply for them.

Alternatively, your partner can apply for her children's Canadian citizenship when she applies for her own. However, she can't apply for them before she applies for herself, as she is not a Canadian citizen yet.

There is no period of residency for children to apply -- the only variables that matter are whether you (a Canadian citizen) or your wife (eligible to apply for citizenship) meet the necessary criteria.

Maybe too late.

For Minor application, CIC gives following information:
Use this application ([CIT 0003]) if you are applying for citizenship for a child under 18. The child must be a permanent resident of Canada. The child must also have at least one parent who is a Canadian citizen or who will become a citizen at the same time.

In addition, Citizenship applicants 14 years of age or older on the date of the signatures on the application must:
be able to understand and speak basic English or French, and
know about Canada and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship

There is no residency request for minor, as long as the parents meet the requirements. I applied my daughter with me while she didn't meet the residency request (but I did). NO problem, we both got the oath letter last week.

You could have applied you child with you at the same time (any way, you already missed this), or apply after you get the citizenship, or let your child apply with your wife.

Good luck!

Hi Liz,
You need a parent accompanying the minor in applying for citizenship. So you cannot apply for their citizenship until your wife applies.

Minors need not meet the residency requirements.
