Hi guys! Im confused. I got married in the philippines last march. I will sponsor my husband and i am currently in canada. Im a PR. Do i need to change my name and marital status in order for me to sponsor him? Someone told me that she knew someone who did not change her family name and status while sponsoring her husband and it got delayed. Any thoughts/answers for this? Thank you!!! :)

Some people believe that getting your name changed to your husbands will help. I don't think it's too true, though.

And, changing your status - I think you have to?

You DO NOT need to change your last name. You can, if you want change your status in your Passport, but that will mean applying for a new passport from your home country's embassy. That will take days if not months. Also, changing names may complicate matters because of different names in different documents.

Since you are a PR, you have to reside in Canada while you submit the application for spousal sponsorship. The important thing is that you have to provide proof that the marriage is genuine. So, provide marriage certificate, pictures of marriage ceremony (not video), pictures of you two visiting some places together after marriage, your correspondence with him such as e-mail log, skype log, facebook conversation etc.

My personal opinion - leave your surname different for right now. Makes it easier to process a "Jones" and a "Smith" versus two "Smiths" as far as keeping paperwork in order.

Changing your name isn't a legal requirement in Canada. In fact, marriage isn't a legal way to change your name in Quebec!

I didn't change my name and I had no problems. Your status will change, though, once you're married!

It is illegal in my country to change your last name for any reason. Actually, if you want to change your name, it has to be for a justifiable reason (e.g., it has given you legal problems before), takes several years and it requires a lawyer. So I haven't changed my name here either, or my papers would get very complicated!

if you have time so you can do it but if you want now to submit then leave it and if it is possible when you will submit your incom tax you must update your marriage status to tax department.

I wanted to change my last name to my husband's right after we got married, but I figured it would take a lot of time to process the name change, that would entail getting a new passport, applying for new ID's (which could take months), changing all my bank profiles, etc etc, just a huge pain. So I decided to wait until the sponsorship stuff goes through. You can always use your husband's last name informally and just formally change it once you guys are together for good. I think it's not a requirement in Canada or anywhere for that matter, to change your last name once your married.
