In short, if getting a passport under the new name is urgent, best to use the certificate with the old name (i.e. don't go apply for a new certificate that has the new name), and get the legal name change docs to have the passport issued with the new name.

Once passport is issued, apply for a new citizenship certificate that has the new name on it (if one so desires to have a certificate that reflects the new name).

Would you agree, @yycgirl27 @armoured ? And from your timeline @yycgirl27 , how long has it been since you applied for a new certificate and is still waiting?
Yes, this is exactly what I have been saying: definitely apply for passport using citizenship certificate + change of name docs first.

Frankly I question whether having change of nmae reflected in citizenship certificate serves any significant purpose (esp once passport in new name is in hand), but by all means, go ahead.

Hello Everyone,

My wife has applied for Canadian Citizenship and her test is due next month. She would like to change her surname i.e. from her father's surname to my surname. Can anyone suggest, how to change the surname during the citizenship application process? If we use the webform which category should we choose? Thank you

Step 1 - She has to change the name with the province first.
Step 2 - After getting the name change certificate, she has to change her name on her IDs (health card/DL/SIN).
Step 3 - Then she has to send her name change application to CPC Sydney to change her name with IRCC. Her name will only be changed in the immigration system if she will send name change application to CPC Sydney. This will update immigration record name.

I didn’t know step 3 and I ended up having the same name on my citizenship certificate. Now I’m waiting for proof of citizenship (17 months process).

I would rather wait for the updated certificate than to get the passport under old name and go through everything again. There’s no guarantee you will receive your passport under new name. They go by citizenship certificate name. I went to the passport office and this is what I got. No one is sure lol they literally aren’t sure about their own process.
I got citizenship certificate then i changed my first name and i got certificate with new first name and applied for passport with new name . passport office mention you can show citizenship certificate with old name (as citizenship certificate update name processing time so long) i showed citizen ship certificate with old name and i got my passport with new name on it . now i am apply for name change on citizenship certificate as just for future reference.....

you mentioned you got your certificate with new first name and then you showed your certificate with old name?? I’m confused what you did.
It’s not a guarantee that my passport will have an updated name on it as certificate is the proof of citizenship. It’s a 50-50 chance. I did talk to someone in the office.

No, not true. The forms are quite clear that you apply for passport with change of name docs and will get passport in new name. You do not need updated citizenship certificate to apply for the passport this way.

Check this they clearly mentioned you dont need to update citizenship certificate with new name they will accept with old name and with new name certificate from ontario ...

Check name section down there ...

New name proof is name change certificate as both name on certificate so confirmed person is same so
Citizenship proof is certificate with old name ..
