Providing upfront medicals means you submit the medicals with the submission of your file. It has a positive and a negative point.

Positive - it will reduce the processing times.
Negative - we can not make a fair guess about the decision of the file until the decision is shared by CIC. In case one does not provide medicals upfront and then CIC requests medicals, we can be positive that they would be approving the file after medicals but with upfront medicals we have to wait till the last moment. However, providing upfront medicals will really cut the processing time short.

Its your call. Keep us posted. Cheers!
Thanks Gaurav

Welcome mate!
Sorry Gaurav, another question :)...

So me my wife, and my kid already have visitor visa(TRV) since 2nd quarter 2017, but I'm still going to apply for work permit (After LMIA approval which will be done 3rd week this February), my NOC is 2175 . Im submitting work permit outside Canada, do you think my work permit application will be faster considering i already have TRV and experience traveling Canada as visitor?.. And is it better if I apply my wife for Open work permit, my kid for study permit once they are inside Canada (because they will be also coming with me once i get my actual permit from canada immigration officers, but they are only coming as visitors).

Hi,
I'm a student in Canada.

My spouse applied via paper on Dec 20 for sowp included passport - biometrics done same day

Received update requesting additional docs on Jan 11 (was given until Feb 10 to submit)

Docs Submitted Jan 31.

Haven't heard anything. How long will it take for update??

Original processing time was 3 weeks.

Any questions/queries regarding SOWP and Express Entry? Just start typing!
Hi. Hope that your offer of assistance/advice is still valid.

My wife was recently approved to start a 2-yr program of study commencing May 2018. We are still torn concerning whether I should quit my job and follow her, since it seems risky. However, we are realizing that it may not be as risky as we think and that we may simply just not have all the answers.

Questions:
  1. Can I visit Canada after my wife has started her study and use the flag-pole method to obtain a SOWP or do I need to apply for this?
  2. Would I also need to have secured the job offer before coming to Canada?
  3. If I am able to secure the SOWP, what happens to us once she has completed her program of study - she intends to apply for the PGWP?
  4. We have a minor aged child. The thought is that we will both visit my wife and then pursue the SOWP for myself. Clearly we would want to enroll our child in school for the duration. How will this be possible?
Thanks for the offer of assistance.

Hello,

When checking for SOWP timelines on CIC's website. Which category do you pick from the drop-down menu...WORK PERMIT or WORK PERMIT EXTENSION?

Thank you!

Cant be sure about the processing times mate. And yes, applying for your wife when she will be in canada will also cut down the processing time for her application, for your child also, apply when you reach here. you can apply now also, but just in case there is a delay with your wife's or child's application, you ll have to come here alone or withdraw the applications. so its better to file their applications when they reach here.

If applied from Canada, call the CIC helpline. if from any other country, check with the high comission of canada in your country. if they do not give any update, let me know.

Hi,

  1. Can I visit Canada after my wife has started her study and use the flag-pole method to obtain a SOWP or do I need to apply for this? You can apply for a visitor visa or SOWP or for both.
  2. Would I also need to have secured the job offer before coming to Canada? SOWP is an open work permit, you can work for any employer in Canada, need not to secure a job before coming here.
  3. If I am able to secure the SOWP, what happens to us once she has completed her program of study - she intends to apply for the PGWP? She can apply for PGWP after she completes her course. Would be valid for 2 years i believe.
  4. We have a minor aged child. The thought is that we will both visit my wife and then pursue the SOWP for myself. Clearly we would want to enroll our child in school for the duration. How will this be possible? You can apply for a student visa for your child without hesitation.
My advice, as you have mentioned that you are skeptical about leaving your current job, let your wife go for the studies and once she join her classes, apply for your(SOWP) and your child's visa(student). You would need to show funds for sure mate as your wife will be on student visa.
