Prince Edward Island (PEI) is the latest in a string of provinces to benefit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada funding to go towards online tools.  Over four years, PEI will receive $808,000 to promote the province as an immigration destination through the development of online services, content, and tools for prospective immigrants as well as those who have already arrived.

A new study recommends that Canada attract more foreign students to its educational institutions and that it put systems in place to convince them to stay in Canada upon graduation.  International students with Canadian degrees have a better chance of finding jobs than internationally-trained immigrants, who must go through the foreign credential recognition process. Being young, educated, and attuned to Canadian life, foreign students are immigrants of choice, with no settlement-integration cost and strong potential to contribute to the Canadian labour force.

Ontario Employer Initiative to Improve Integration of Foreign-Trained Workers Print E-mail

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC)'s Global Experience @ Work initiative consists of seven local community projects to engage employers in the integration of internationally-trained professionals and tradespeople.  Managed by over 80 community organizations and 9 local Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade, these projects will grant newcomers access to direct placements as well as mentorship and internship opportunities. Ontario employers will benefit from seminars, toolkits, and diversity and cross-cultural training.  Additional initiatives will focus on increasing immigrant understanding about employment integration in Ontario prior to arrival.

Quebec Increasing Annual Immigration Targets Print E-mail

Quebec Immigration Minister Yolande James recently announced that the province will be progressively increasing the number of immigrants to Quebec over the next three years.  By 2010, the Quebec government plans to welcome 55,000 newcomers, up from approximately 46,000 this year.

Canadian Experience Class to be Introduced in 2008 Print E-mail

As of next year, a new stream of Canadian immigration will be available to certain temporary foreign workers and international students with Canadian degrees and Canadian work experience. First announced in the 2007 budget, the Canadian Experience Class will help address the country’s labour force needs by better focusing on these candidates for Canadian Permanent Residency. A report by the Canadian Bureau for International Education states that the international student talent pool could add up to 30,000 skilled immigrants every year if Canada were to implement a national strategy on international students.

Canadian Temporary Resident Visas No Longer Required for Czech and Latvian Visitors Print E-mail

Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, recently announced that citizens of the Czech Republic and Latvia will no longer need visas to visit Canada.  The policy is effective immediately and is applicable to visits of 90 days or less.

Wages Increases, Better Jobs, and a Good Business Climate in Canada Print E-mail

Not only is job creation growing steadily in Canada, but a large proportion of this growth is in sectors with high employment quality.  This is according to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)'s employment quality index, which measures job quality based on compensation, stability, and its impact on the overall economy.  Canada's index rose by 3.8 per cent this year to its highest level in over two years, with the province of Saskatchewan as the new national leader.
