New Offices to Protect Temporary Foreign Workers in Alberta Print E-mail

The Alberta government has recently established special advisory offices in Edmonton and Calgary for temporary foreign workers. They will provide one-stop access to information and services and will help ensure that temporary workers are treated fairly in their workplaces.  A team of inspectors and employment standards officers are available through these offices to provide help resolving issues related to employment standards and occupational health and safety.  They will also carry out inspections of companies to ensure that temporary foreign workers receive the wages, overtime, general holiday, and vacation pay to which they are entitled.

Canada's Competition Bureau Recommends Revising Professional Licensing Requirements Print E-mail

A recent study by Canada's Competition Bureau found that rules that restrict who can offer professional services in Canada may go further than necessary to protect the public interest.  Studies have shown that Canada's professions are more regulated than their counterparts in other similar countries.  The Competition Bureau's report recommends that regulators revise or remove some of the rules that govern certain professional accreditations.

Quebec Allocates Millions to Montreal Newcomers Print E-mail

The city of Montreal will receive $4.5 million over three years from the Quebec provincial government to fund programs to help immigrants find employment and learn about Quebec culture.  On an annual basis, this is twice the amount that the provincial government has provided in the past for these programs.

Lost Canadians to Regain Citizenship Print E-mail

A recent Citizenship and Immigration Canada report recommends that the federal government retroactively restore Canadian citizenship to thousands of 'Lost Canadians'.  These people have had their citizenship denied or unknowingly allowed to expire because of several obscure clauses in the 1947 Citizenship Act.

Canadians speak over 200 languages according to the latest language reports from Statistics Canada's 2006 census.  For the first time in Canadian history, allophones (people whose first language is neither French nor English) represented 20 per cent of Canada's population.

One Fifth of Canadian Population is Foreign-Born Print E-mail

The latest Statistics Canada report from the 2006 census came out yesterday.  It focuses on immigration and language and highlights the important contribution of newcomers to Canada’s growth and increasing diversity.  In 2006, some 1.2 million immigrants had settled in Canada since the last census in 2001, an increase of 13.6 per cent and four times the growth rate of the Canadian-born population.  Recent Statistics Canada reports maintain that by 2030, Canada will be completely dependent on immigration for population growth.

In-Person Foreign Credential Referral Services Now Offered Across Canada Print E-mail
