Following from new legislation passed in late 2006, the Province of Ontario has appointed its first ever Fairness Commissioner to work with regulatory bodies for the recognition of the credentials of internationally trained professionals. The role of Fairness Commissioner is a key component of the Fair Access to Regulated Professions Act, 2006, which became law on March 1, 2007.

Gates suggested that his home country had much to learn from its Northern neighbour in terms of immigration policy.

The latest national census confirmed that, though the population of New Brunswick has not decreased over the past five years, it has not seen much growth either. Greg Byrne, the minister responsible for the population growth secretariat has underlined the importance of encouraging people to settle in New Brunswick and to stay there. The provincial government has allocated 3 million dollars towards initiatives to increase the province’s population, double the amount since last year. Much of this spending will be aimed at programs to attract new immigrants to New Brunswick.

In its eighth consecutive year, Quebec’s Action Week Against Racism is a clear indication that the province is open and welcoming to diverse cultural groups and that it is working to ease the settlement and integration of newcomers into Quebec society. The theme of this year’s event is The Workplace: A Racism-Free Zone and it is dedicated to encouraging the open discussion and development of ideas to make Quebec a society free of any discrimination. Given the importance of Quebec immigration to maintaining population and economic growth, the ideas and results that come from this week will be very valuable to all Quebec society.

Statistics Canada’s most recent census, which covers the period from 2001--2006, indicates that immigrants to Canada are responsible for two thirds of the country’s population growth. With the total Canadian population swelling to 31.6 million, the Canada-born populace increase of 400,000 was well outdone by the additional 1.2 million immigrants over the five-year span of the census.

A recent poll ranks Canada as the country with the most positive influence in the world. 28,000 people in 27 countries were asked to rate 12 countries as either having a positive or negative worldwide influence. Canada’s overall influence rating topped the list with 54 per cent of respondents rating it mostly positive and only 14 per cent mostly negative. Japan came in at a close second with an identical positive rating but a higher negative rating.

In an effort to encourage Canadian permanent residents to become fully engaged Canadian citizens, Canada’s most recent former Governor-General has founded The Institute for Canadian Citizenship. The Right-Honourable Adrienne Clarkson will serve as co-chair of the new non-profit organization with her husband, philosopher John Ralston Saul.
