Mentors help new immigrant students with their first day of school in Canada

For most students across Canada, this week marks the first week of classes in the 2009-2010 school year. Last week, a newcomer orientation program that helps young immigrants learn about what to expect on their first day at a Canadian school was held in the Kitchener-Waterloo region in Ontario.

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Canada Minister Jason Kenney and Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan have announced a new international information-sharing initiative that will enhance Canada’s security and protect the integrity of Canadian immigration programs. The program will also help ensure that prospective Canadian immigrants and refugee claimants are not disadvantaged by fraudulent refugee claims or other abuses of Canada’s immigration system.
