Working in Canada, whilst applying for immigration

Could someone tell me whether or not I can work temporarily in Canada whilst my immigration is going through ? or do I have to be in my home country while it is being processed ?

If you can get an approved work permit, you can work in Canada during the processing.  Though if an interview is required, you would have to return for it.
