Hi

I'm an international student in Quebec, about 2 months away from graduation. I'm also a permanent resident of the United states. I'd like to work as a freelance translator until my post-graduation work permit application is processed and hopefully approved.

I was thinking I could accept contracts here, but ask my clients to treat me as a US individual for the time being, meaning I would receive payments at my US address, and the funds would go into my US bank account... I figured since everything is done over the internet, I don't really need to be physically in the US to do it...

Any idea if this violates the "prohibited from engaging in employment in Canada" clause on my study permit?

Thanks!

Yes, it does, but if your clients are US based then you can do it.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

BCguy, do you mean that it's the kind of thing that is in fact illegal, but can't really be enforced?

PMM, do you think I could use a middleman located in the US to deal with my Canadian clients? That would effectively mean I'm only dealing with a US client, right?
