Canada's ageing workforce will shrink dramatically in the coming years despite a steady flow of immigration, according to a new study.
The Statistics Canada study predicts changes in the Canadian workforce over the next 20 years, comparing the number of workers with the number of retirees drawing pensions.
The study found that the current ratio of workers to retirees, 4.5 to 1, will decrease to between 2.5 and 2.8 to 1 by 2031.
The study took into account Canada immigration levels, birth and death rates, and the number of people reaching the retirement age of 65.
The shrinking ratio could force the government to increase taxes or cut spending to deal with the high retirement rate.
Canadian immigration policies have favoured increased immigration from young families and skilled workers in order to address the ageing population and low fertility rate.
In recent years Canada has consistently attained net migration levels above 200,000 per year
