Hi..I am currently working as a food counter attendant and my work permit would expire this january 2012. My current employer is processing to renew the permit. But I have found an employer also and would like to hire me as a live-in caregiver. He would be willing to process my papers and basically both permits will be process almost at the same time. Will this be possible? Can I possibly have 2 permits? Am I allowed to work as a live in caregiver and  maybe work part time as  a food counter attendant. Is both permit going to be valid?
Please help. thanks

No, you can't have two WPs. Either you work as a live in caregiver or a food counter attendant. Are you qualified to apply as a live in caregiver? If you want to be under the live in caregiver program, your WP for the live in caregiver should be sent outside of Canada.

But did you mean I can still apply as a caregiver but because I am here already in Canada, I won't  be part of the Live-In Caregiver Program?    I don't mind if that's the case because I am planning to work full time as a caregiver and just tender resignation to  my current employer as soon as i have the work permit for my new one..as a caregiver.

Thank you for the information.

hi you can work as a live in caregiver as long as you have the qualification. see the website CIC.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/caregiver/apply-who.asp#training

if you dont have this qualification of a 6 months caregiver course or one yr fulltime employment as caregiver your wp may be refused and since you came here initially as FCA they might required you to have medical examination as part of the processing.

You can apply as a caregiver if you are qualified but in order for you to be able to apply for permanent residency after 24 months or 3900 hours work as live in caregiver, you have to apply for your initial work permit as a caregiver, outside Canada. if you applied for the WP as live in caregiver (change work status) through CPC Vegreville, then you can also do that but you will not be able to apply for the PR after 24 mos/3900 hrs. You'd be working under the TFW program and will have to leave Canada after 4 years of work as TFW-caregiver.

The initial WP has to be applied for at a visa office outside Canada for you to qualify under the live in Caregiver Program. If you are already in Canada and under the TFW program and decided to work as a live in caregiver, you have to apply again outside of Canada to qualify for PR.

Hi,

How about from LCP to FSW?  Can a TFW under the Live-In Caregiver Program change status to a FSW?  What procedures must be done?

A friend arrived here recently under LCP.  To his knowledge in order to get his PR, he must adhere to this long processing time for PR apps after the 2-year Program.

Now he is opening his options of changing his status.

Before coming here, he was able to assess his credentials with the help of an immigration agency.  He met the minimal requirements.  He passed the point system category.  In other words, he is eligible to file under the FSW.

The only thing he elected LCP is the encouragement of a resident relative and the processing time of LCP (which is faster) versus FSW in his home country.

If he can find an employer willing to file for LMO in his favour, has the necessary requirements for the job, then he can apply for the WP. After working for two years under a skilled position, he can then apply for PR under CEC (i.e. if CIC does not change rules again), as they have been streamlining, I don't know if they call that improvement to the programs, the immigration systems. These rules are not written on stone, hence the changes. I know of one who came under LCP, found a hospital employer, changed WP and is now working as a nurse.

Hi Job_Seeker,

Thanks for the input.

Actually, he is a nurse too.  Worked in his home country for years before coming here.

Where will he apply his WP if he finds an employer?  Will he need to undergo medicals again?

Thanks.   Smiley

Apply thru CPC-Vegreville. The checklist does not include medicals because the medicals had been sent when he applied under the program.
