work experience queries

A friend of mine wants to apply for fsw1 but is confused on the number of points to claim for working experience. first he worked on part time in company A for 26 month on noc 7216 while a student at the university and secondly on full time for company B for 3years on same noc 7216 after graduating from the university. During the 3years of full time employment, the company gave him 1year leave to participate in a training but was still under the companies employment. now the question is can he claim 4+years altogether as the reference letter he got from company B states that he was on full time employment for 3years during which he had a 1year leave?.
 please any suggestion will be very helpful.
