I was wondering, is it possible (guess it is?) to open up a bank account in Canada and get
money transferred before I apply for PR? Would that help the sponsorship?

Well, it wouldn't hurt the sponsorship. It certainly can be done if you can find a bank that allows non-PRs to have an account (usually you just need an address and status, I think). But unless you opened it with your spouse jointly, I doubt it would have any bearing on your application. Money is money, whether it is in Canada or out of it.
