Will be landing soon - Please share your experiences and help me relax...

Hello all. I am planning on driving up to Vancouver, BC in a couple weeks and do the landing formalities. I cannot, however, take any days of so this will need to be a weekend trip. I was wondering if there are booths at the customs office for applying or if one has to go to the office in Vancouver. Any ideas?
Also, I am planning on moving for good around April 2009 and have a few more things that I am wondering about. Any input will be much appreciated.
- If I drive my car from the US, would it be a problem now? Will they ask me to do the import formalities now or can I just drive this time and do the import at the time of the move? Should I just rent a car?
- I know that I need to provide the goods to follow list now. How precise do I need to be? If I have additional items with me at the time of the final move, will it cause any issues?
- What other paper work do you suggest to complete in this initial trip? I know I need to apply for a SIN - anything else?
- Is it OK to have a travelers cheque as the proof of funds?
Thank you all in advance for your time...

You can put your car on the goods to follow list. Proof of funds in traveller checks is fine but so is a bank statement. You just have to show that you have the funds available. You do need to apply for a SIN but you need an address for the SIN card to be sent to. Same with the PR card, you need an address to have it sent to. Do you know anybody whose address you can use?
