A thread for all the married couples out there... who proposed to who? And how? Was it a premeditated thing, planned months in advance? Or was it completely out of the blue? When and where did the proposal take place? Was there a ring involved? Was it a public proposal, or private?

For us, we knew for a while that we would end up getting married, although we didn't know exactly when the decision would be made. I ended up proposing to my wife in a park in Hanoi, Vietnam, in the afternoon of June 2nd, 2009, during my first visit there. We had gone out for coffee and had been having a frank talk about the future of our relationship. We shared our feelings honestly, and I explained how I was afraid that I might not be ready for marriage yet--that is, that I might not have resolved enough of my own faults or be ready to accept hers. She challenged me by saying that we didn't need to wait until we had reached a state of perfection and overcome all of our personal challenges, only that we were willing to grow together and work on them together as a couple. What she said touched me, and, as we sat down to rest in the park, I summoned up my courage and asked her if she would marry me despite all my faults, and she said yes. We were surrounded by people, but I'm not sure how many of them realized what was going on Wink There was no ring involved at that time, since I hadn't expected to propose that day--although as I said, we had thought about it and talked about it for a while.

When we met i was only 13 and he was 16 so marriage was a long way away.
It got to 2 weeks before my 18th birthday and with us still being together i had asked him what he saw in our future, he said marriage and kids so i knew it was coming.
About 2 days before we where in bed just chatting about random things and he suddenly rolled out of bed landed on the floor and appeared again on one knee with a ring its was so sweet.
I then however had to wait till my 18th birthday so he could ask my dad if we could get engaged, my dad said yes and he gave me the ring.
The following month we found out we were expecting our first child, we got married a year later.
Four children and 10 yrs later we are ready to make the big move Smiley

We were in Tim Horton's, talking about how it would be neat to have a cactus collection once we live together. At some point he said, "Hey, we should get married". I said, "Yep, probably"

Then we picked out engagement rings later.

We were eating in a restaurant and I had spaghetti. Halfway through the meal, I somehow clumsily managed to form the words "marry me" on the plate using those spaghetti. She was laughing at my clumsiness while saying "yes". Tongue

hahahaha that's the best one I've heard yet. reminds me of Lady and the Tramp Cheesy

I like it... relaxed, uncomplicated, and naturally brought up Smiley

Ahhh going down on one knee-- so romantic. I wondered whether I should do that but I felt shy doing it in public, especially in a place with such a different culture. Plus I guess you need to have a ring first! It's nice to hear stories about people who married young and are still together too—gives you faith that young people can really meet the challenges of marriage and make things work.
