I'm American, and my Canadian husband is sponsoring me in a Family Class/Spouse application.

So... this probably qualifies as a dumb question, but:

How do we first hear back from immigration about our case?

Does Mississauga let us know anything?

Or will we not hear anything till Buffalo?

Or... do we get this "AOR" thing, or is that just for Skilled Worker cases?

THANK YOU!

First thing you will probably get is a letter from Mississauga telling you the sponsorship was approved. You can expect this about a month (give or take a couple of weeks) after you send in the application.
If there's something wrong with the application (ie a missing form), then Mississauga will return the whole thing to you and ask you to send it again when it's complete.

Buffalo usually sends AOR letters as well, so you can expect that a few weeks after the sponsorship approval.

The sponsorship approval will mailed to the sponsor. After the file hasbeen transferred to Buffalo, you'll be the one who is contacted and you'll also get an Acknowledgment of Receipt once Buffalo started processing.

I asked this on another thread and I don't believe I got a response (forgive me if I'm wrong) but about the whole application getting sent back. Do they automatically send it back to the sponsor every time... even if the application is paid for entirely by applicant and sent from the applicant? Does anyone have any experience with this? I live in the US, and I am the applican't obviously. ;-)

I don't think I've ever heard of an application being returned that hadn't been sent in by the sponsor. Not sure if they send it back to the sponsor or the sender. Hopefully you won't have to find out Wink

Thanks mitamata! I hope so too! I know... our situation's a bit different in that aspect I suppose. Hopefully it won't cause any problems :-)

Hi nyssa - I have read somewhere but can't find it presently that it is returned to the sponsor as the sponsor is the "responsible" party (as the applicant is instructed on the cic pages to send the PR application to the sponsor and the sponsor is supposed to send it to cic).  However... I am not sure at all; it may be that this is only one interpretation.

We got an approval letter for sponsorship within a months time addressed to me(sponsor)
Next month, we got the AOR mail addressed to my wife's name(immigrant)
