Just what are the hidden costs and is there an ideal sum of cash to have sitting in the bank? Good info

We tend to put most of our expenses for a family of 4 on a credit card and pay it off every month.  The average monthly bill is around $3,200 for food, clothing, pet food, gifts, car fuel, entertainment, small holidays, house/garden/car maintenance.  We live comfortably, but not extravagantly.  It does NOT include education, mortgage or annual expenses of taxes ($4,000), electricity, gas, water ($2,500), car insurance for one vehicle ($1,200).  This month we had to replace our furnace ($5,000).  (Actually, that was an interesting exercise for me, because originally I guessed our average credit card bill would have been closer to $2,500/month, hmmmmmm?  Inflation!)  Hope this helps.
