Washington D.C Work Permit Application processing time.

Hello All,
On December 27th 2011, I submitted my application for the temporary work permit and sent the application packet, documents and my passport to the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C.
I wanted to know if anyone here had any recent experiences with this Consulate and would like to know what the processing times were before they came up with a decision and returned the passport.
Also, I have a naive question. Is there any acknowledgement from the Consulate once they receive the application through an email or phone? Do they provide some kind of tracking number to enable us to check for updates?

Hello People,

Can someone please explain what happens step by step after you submit the application? I sent my application along with the passport to the Washington D.C consulate on the 27th of December and it reached them on December 28th and has been signed for.
So from here, how do I know the status of the application? Do I get any kind of notification?
