Waiting on passport books, have cards, what to enter?

Sponsor is Canadian, kids and I are US.

My kids and I have passport cards but are getting the passport books after learning we need those for PR. We want to apply as soon as possible now that we are married!

Can I use/enter our passport card numbers in the application and then update them when our passport books come later on? Or do I need to even update the numbers, and just send the books when they are requested (does the number matter?). Should I send an explanation that I've entered the card number but have sent for the books?

You need to send copies of the "books" not the card with your application.

Thank you PMM. Can I ask another question - will the passport book number be the same or different from the card number? Just wondering, if it's the same, I can at least get these forms printed up and that part ready. Or would I be better off calling the passport office to ask this?

1.  Probably different.  You can print the forms and leave the passport details blank.  Then fill them in by hand once you have the passports.

I have both a US passport book and card -- applied for them together, on the same application form. Their numbers are VERY different, no relation between them at all.

Why do you have both a book and a card??

I had a passport card, I regret getting it.  When I got it they told me that almost everyone who gets one ends up getting a book later down the road.  I still decided to get a card, and then I started this process and needed the book   The cards are pretty much useless, you can only use them to drive to Canada or Mexico, you can't even fly with them!

Anyway, your passport book will have an entirely different number, but they will be linked, so when you cross the border with your book passport, they will also so records from your card passport, and vice versa

I had a passport card, I regret getting it.  When I got it they told me that almost everyone who gets one ends up getting a book later down the road.  I still decided to get a card, and then I started this process and needed the book   The cards are pretty much useless, you can only use them to drive to Canada or Mexico, you can't even fly with them!

1) It was just an extra $20 to get a card when I got mine.
2) For an additional piece of government ID, especially since I do not even have a driver's license (can't drive). It's the only photo ID I have that's wallet-sized now.
3) For cases when I don't have my passport book with me (update, if it gets lost, PPR someday maybe, have had to send it in original for one or two other things before too).

I don't see how a relatively inexpensive additional piece of government issued ID is useless, particularly one that can still help you get back and forth across the border by land in a pinch.
